Christmas Donation to the Oncology o/p comfort fund

You guys rock! I came home and counted out the donations from the club members: $345.00. That will be so appreciated by those in need.

As mentioned tonight, members had asked that the donation go to a cancer-related fund this year, and specifically to Fredericton area patients. I contacted the Oncology Department at the DECH, and Oncology Social Worker Julie Doucet suggested that we direct the funds to the Oncology o/p comfort fund.

"The oncology comfort fund is dedicated specifically to Fredericton oncology patients and is used for gas cards, assisting with cost of medications, equipment (i.e. lymphedema sleeve if they don’t have coverage for example), and other necessities as deemed appropriate.”

I will drop off the donation on Friday, and have asked that receipts be sent to the addresses on the cheques.

Thank you for your generosity and kindness,

Johanna

Holiday Party Update

Our Holiday Party is being held at the Fredericton Motor Inn, Regency Room this coming Wednesday, Dec 12th at 5:30.

We will have the option of ordering from the menu or from the buffet. The buffet will have their festive chicken as well as their seafood casserole. Buffet cost is $19.95 but does not include dessert or hot drinks.

By popular demand we will be having our annual Yankee Swap. For those participating the recommended gift value is in the $10.00-$15.00 range. I have confirmed that there will be a Christmas tree for the occasion.

We will also have an associated charity event. This year Johanna P. organized this for us and recommends the following. We would donate the money to the DECH Hospital Foundation, and indicate that we wish the money to go to the “Oncology Comfort Fund for Oncology Patients”. If you are writing a cheque, I would suggest “DECH Hospital Foundation- Oncology Comfort Fund”. Otherwise the money may go elsewhere.

I think that covers it. Call or email me if you have any questions.

 Happy Holidays everyone,

      Gary

Delay of tech session at Bob's.

During the last breakfast I mentioned that I would hold an engine assembly tech session at my place.  As it turns out, the connecting rod bushings that I knew, I swore, I was certain I had—I don't.  After turning my well organized collection of new and old Jag parts into a large pile in the middle of the garage, they failed to materialize.
While talking with Ian I learned that these bushings will need reaming to size after I drive them in.  Another set is on their way and I hope to start assembly before Christmas.
    Bob E.

The Landy Teardown Report

After all the practice we got disassembling the Landy, pulling the engine apart was a breeze.  Nothing fell on us, we didn't have to lay on our backs, and the parts were small enough to allow us to use a hoist and engine stand.
Armed with a complete lack of familiarity with Land Rover engines, Kelvin had issued concise instructions on the order of component removal after not having read the manual. We ignored him and blindly removed every nut and bolt in no particular order whatsoever. Stuff fell off, usually unexpectedly and usually accompanied by a gush of something gooey and foul smelling.
After a break for lunch (thanks Kelvin) we resumed and made quick work of getting the pan off. To our surprise, the bottom end was rust free and well oiled.  It was too bad that the other side was a rusty mess with two pistons solidly locked into their bores.
During the teardown, Joe had offered his opinion (at great length) on using the modern V8 Rover engine rather than the medieval original engine.  Seeing the condition of the Landy's motor, Kelvin started to take him seriously.
Joe also offered to clear up some garage space by taking the Mini to it's new home.  We were then entertained by the sight of Joe squeeeezing his way into the Westies cockpit.    This coming summer may be interesting.

Work Day at Kelvin's

I will be having a work party this Thursday to strip apart the engine, gearbox, transfer box and to break down the engine to see if it can be used or if it is trash. Only then can I proceed with sorting out the drivetrain for installation this coming spring.
Lunch will be provided as usual around noon.

Christmas Party Donation

At the last FABAC meeting, we decided to donate the Christmas party charitable fundraiser to the Canadian Cancer Society. I suggested that we try and focus the gift so that it benefits Fredericton patients. In light of that, I contacted the Oncology social worker to ask for her suggestion. This is her response:

"The oncology comfort fund is dedicated specifically to Fredericton oncology patients and is used for gas cards, assisting with cost of medications, equipment (i.e. lymphedema sleeve if they don’t have coverage for example), and other necessities as deemed appropriate.”

Unless there is an objection to this use of the funds, we would donate the money to the DECH Hospital Foundation, and indicate that we wish the money to go to the “Oncology Comfort Fund for Oncology Patients”. If you are writing a cheque, I would suggest “DECH Hospital Foundation- Oncology Comfort Fund”. Otherwise the money may go elsewhere.

Report on Oktoberfest Run 2018

We can't blame it on the weather since it almost always rains for our end of season Oktoberfest outing.  For whatever reason, only three BDDs showed up at the rendezvous. We made the best of it and headed off into the cold rain.  While we had the back roads to ourselves, we couldn't enjoy the scenery due to the heavy fog, rain on the outsides of the windows, and condensation on the insides.
At the restaurant, a few passengers bolted from their cars complaining that the lead car hadn't made any pit stops.  We met up with the folks from Moncton who for once, out numbered us.   It was nice to have the company of some younger folks which they had brought along who are being initiated into the hobby.  The smaller section of the Gasthaus had been reserved and we just filled it.  Dinner was, as usual, excellent and we all took home doggy/kitty bags.
The return drive was interesting in that while we all took separate routes, we seemed to cross paths a few times on the way home.

Hampton School Show report

Click on the picture to see more great photos.
It was cold and windy but the roads were clear and the sky was a crispy blue—a perfect day for an outing.   Traveling with Joe in his Vanagon was interesting.  It's not fast by any means and because there's no possibility of serious speed, one can forget about being quick and just sit back and enjoy the ride and scenery.
We had a light lunch in a nice small eatery in the town (village?) of Hampton before heading over to Hampton Middle School.  The show had drawn 60 or so cars from the area including a sizable contingent from the Corvette club.  The hit of the day was the enthusiasm of the kids. They took a shine to Joe's van as they could crawl around in it and explore (how many 10 year olds can fit in a van?).  Another VW camper showed up and the two became the hit of the show.
The wind soon subsided and it became comfortably warm.  The school provided free coffee and a bake sale inside.
I found it to be an enjoyable day and hope to make this a regular outing for the club.  The restaurant provides an all important pit stop for us, Hampton is a nice little town, and it's worthwhile to chat with the kids and hopefully pass on some enthusiasm for the hobby.

OktoberFest Run Sunday Oct. 28th

Gasthoff Old Bavarian Restaurant
1130 Knightville Road
Menu here.
Payment Cash or Cheque

Gather at Ramada Inn parking lot (north side) on Sunday, Oct 28th at 11:30 noon, rain or ...it's gonna rain of course so there's no contingency plan for sunshine.

The route:
  • Depart the parking lot at 11:45 sharp along the scenic 105.
  • a short detour along the boring Trans Canada to avoid the partially demolished bridge.
  • regain the 105 after Jemseg and turn left onto the 695 heading towards Cambridge Narrows.
  • after Crossing the bridge at Cambridge Narrows we turn left onto the lovely and relaxing 710.
  • the 710 makes a right turn somewhere after someplace named 'Cody's'.
  • join up with the straight and boring (but thankfully short) highway 10,
  • just before Sussex, turn left onto Roachville Rd.  I don't remember if there's much of a sign there but if we/you miss it, you/we can pick it up soon after at the interchange.
  • follow Roachville Rd a while until you see the right hand turn onto Knightville Rd....which is on the right.
  • at some point the restaurant will appear on the right.
Maps or GPSs are well advised.  I no longer get lost and lead folks astray, but we may become separated. We hope to get there around 2:00.    I've been trying to get in contact with the Moncton gang but they seem to be AWOL this year.  Stay tuned.
- Bob E.

Ever see this?!!!

I bet you have never seen this.  It was in the engine for a year. The owner knows this because every so often the engine would run rough and then it would be fine.  He finally took it apart when it didn’t get better and there was no compression in this cylinder, finding the rocker arm broken and then the rest of the problem.  Also, there was no damage to the top side of the valve just some witness marks on the valve seat both in the head and on the valve itself.  It’s a 3/8 bolt, it’s an extra, none missing from the engine.
(Story passed along by Dan and Bob)

Hampton Middle School Car Show

I got this note from Dan Foote in Hampton about their car show this Friday.  I have attended in the past and have enjoyed it.  The weather that day looks promising but cool. I may attend but can’t commit this early as we’re getting ready to head south. Perhaps if anyone is interested in going, they could note it on the FABAC site.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil - Just wondering if you could pass this invite along to all the members of the FABAC and to anyone else who would like to join in the fun. This is a huge car show and the kids and families love it! If you could let me know how many members would be coming it would be great!

A Friendly reminder - we will be having our 5th annual car show and fall fair with some great prizes to be won. This will be an awesome car show for the students and families of Hampton Middle School on October 26 from 12:30 - 2:30 located at 11 School Street Hampton, NB. We would like to have as many members that are able to, attend this car show.

Hi All

Please come out and join the BATANS fall tour group as they make their mad dash home following a week touring in Quebec and Maine.  They will be stopping in Saint John  for lunch on Saturday Oct 20th at around 1:30 .  I have booked a semi private room at the excellent Britt’s pub at Rockwood Park Golf course.   We will be ordering off the full menu so plenty to pick from.

The BATANS group reportedly will be 17 strong and Karen and I will be joining them.  Please get in touch with me via email if you wish to join this intrepid group of LBC diehards.  They will likely be cold and wet due to the lateness of this fall tour.

Email to book your spot  -  ralphholyoke@gmail.com  Please let me know by Friday the 19th so we can ensure the room is prepared for us.

Report on October Meeting

We hit-up a new-ish restaurant in the Days Inn in Oromocto with much success.  The 'Carnation' Chinese restaurant served the usual fare.  As we waited for the food to arrive, the earlier diners left giving us free reign of the place.  Gary took the floor for a surprisingly quick synopsis of the recent happenings:
  • The Carter House run went off well with a good turnout, almost capacity.  The weather was top down  beautiful and no one got lost or led us astray.
  • King Ralph has invited us down to St John to meet up with BATANS. **News flash** This outing has been cancelled due to BATANs deciding to push on through the port  city.  WE assume that the weather is behind this, NOT that they don't like us.
  • Next Friday sees a car show at the Hampton High School.  Details are already on the site.
  • Next Sunday (28th) is our last 'summer' run as we hit Adolph's in Knightsville for the Octoberfest dinner.
  • John Dewitt presented his suggestion for a Gaspé trip to happen next summer/fall.  There was considerable interest.
  • Our November meeting will be at Sam Snead's upstairs.
Bob E. wants to know why everyone left so early.

A couple of plans for August 16th tour around the Gaspé

John DeW has put forward a couple of excellent options for this Gaspé trip. He asks that you review these proposals and comment or suggest changes that you think might add to the experience. Basically, there is a four day (three overnight stays) and a three day (two overnight stays) version. John is looking into getting a group rate for the hotel stays—especially if we select Days Inn for each overnight. Stay tuned and make a comment, suggestion, criticism or complaint.
(Click here if you would like to see the Google map for the three night option.)

October Meeting October 17th

I've made the reservation for 24 people at the Carnation Chinese Restaurant in the Day's Inn, Oromocto for 5:30. Should there be more than 24, we will need to call them (357-9666) before we leave the Ramada at 5:00.

Email invitation

Hi David:
I got this request from Dan Foote inviting us to participate in a show at the Hampton Middle School on October 26th.  I did attend several years ago and quite a few cars were there and many of the students were quite enthusiastic.  I may attend depending on the weather.  The roads on the route are now quite good.  Can you post this on the FABAC site?

Regards
Phil

Report on the Carter House Turkey Run

While storm clouds boiled on the election horizon, we carefree FABACians met under warming and clear skies to enjoy a day driving the Kingston Peninsula in search of a turkey supper.
A pothole free trip down the 102 brought us to the two ferries where we engaged in battle. The Crumleys in their now back-in-service MGB, took up the rear and wound up as the only car that didn't fit on the Evandale ferry.  The rest of us continued on and waited on the other side of the Belle Isle Bay ferry where we took the opportunity to engage in some informal veggie shopping.
Re-assembled, it was a short trip to the Carter House where, surprise surprise!  there was a turkey dinner waiting for us.  What luck!   It was, of course, excellent and we all ate too much.
A short speech where we thanked our hosts was followed by a group shot outside.  We then mostly parted ways for everyone's trip home.
     Thanks to all for attending.

Notes from September FABAC Meeting

We covered a lot of ground last night, met a new member and reconnected with one of the original members.   Henning introduced his wife, Rose, and Mark Cowell, an original member was (hopefully) made to feel at home.
Gary took the reigns and recapped the last month's events:
  • Rita and Bob's cottage visit.
  • The visit to Nackawic to take Lise and Alex to lunch.
  • Rick and Terry's 'Blueberry Explosion' up near Woodstock.
  • Phil talked about the MG guru presently making the rounds of the Maritimes.  See the post from a few weeks back.
  • There was also a brief chat regarding the trip to the Owl's Head museum in Maine last weekend.  Phil had the privilege of driving a 1913 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost.
  • There was a quick update on this weekend's Carter House run and dinner.
  • There will be our annual year end run to Knightville for Octoberfest in Adolph's German restaurant.
  • There was a lot of confusing talk about browbeating someone to organize a run to 'Walter's Restaurant'.  Watch for a possible update to this one.
  • The next meeting will be at the Day's Inn in Oromocto on the 17th of October.
  • John Dewitt will be planning a trip to the Gaspé next year.
  • Kelvin finally showed up and teased us with rumours of a small town somewhere in the US states not far from here that stages sports car racing through the streets every year.  Watch for news on this one too.

MGA Guru

I mentioned Barney Gaylord at breakfast this morning and suggested that folks might be interested in checking out his website at https://www.mgaguru.com
After he and his son Elliott left us Sunday Sept. 3rd, he spent some time with Robb Steeves in Moncton and on to Bedford to meet with the BATANS group and spend the week traveling around NS working on LBCs and taking some interesting photos. They attended a BATANS group BBQ and went on to PEI on Sunday to meet up with a number of British car owners including Bob Bentley. It looks like he will be here for some time and may be passing through Fredericton again.  It may be a good time for anyone who has a thorny issue with their car to get some expert help.
