As I take on the Great Cycle Challenge for the ninth time, I will share my motivation for riding 400 km in the month of August to raise money for Sick Kids Hospital's Oncology Programme.
This spring, I celebrated thirteen years since my surgery for ovarian cancer. In 2013, when I was diagnosed, I had one grandchild. I now have four. I would never have had the opportunity to meet and love three of them if it had not been for the excellent medical care I received.
I was present to cheer my daughter Catharine as she rode to an Olympic bronze medal in mountain biking at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and I have celebrated her transition from International cycling competitor to Coach of the Canadian Mountain Bike team.
I celebrated my son Geoff as he gained a Masters in Disaster Management, and is now Deputy Emergency Program Co-ordinator for the City of Victoria, BC.
With my husband Bruce, I have boated on the Amazon and hiked Machu Picchu, in Peru and Torres Del Paine and El Chaltén, in Patagonia. We have cycled throughout Croatia and Cuba, and visited Haiti, Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Roatan. I have driven across Canada by myself and with Bruce.
And I have been able to give back by raising more than $25,540 ($19,624.00 of that through the GCC so far) for cancer research through such events as the Enbridge Ride, The Tour of Hope, and the Great Cycle Challenge. Through Cancer Support networks, I have been able to encourage other women who travel this same journey.
To say I am grateful would not begin to express my appreciation. I truly recognize the gift of time that I have been given and thank every single person involved in my care.
A few years ago, Isaac Jewett and I teamed up to form Team Isaac. If you would like to learn more about Team Isaac, or contribute to the Great Cycle Challenge, please go to: www.greatcyclechallenge.ca and enter my name as participant. Isaac and I would love your continued support. He is now enjoying being a cancer free 15 year old.

With a reservation lost, and Gary laid up and not able to smooth the situation over, mayhem ensued. We grabbed tables and chairs and made our own enclave under cover of the outdoor balcony.
Hi Everyone,
First of all, I wanted to say thanks to all those that called wishing me a fast recovery from this bloody back issue. I can’t tell you how much Barb and I wanted to attend this significant milestone for our club. We are over the top happy to see how really fantastic it turned out. Ernst did an excellent job at bringing the overall group together and deserves a big thank you from all of us for making this happen! Also a big thank you to the many who contributed to the overall success of the event. A huge success on all accounts!
"It would have brought tears to your eyes, Gary. 15 LBCs sitting in the pounding rain, up to their spokes in mud and brown water."
FABAC's 25 year celebration took place under appropriately wet and overcast skies. Still, it didn't dampen anyone's spirits as the cars bounced and splashed through the potholed, wet road. There were a lot of folks (and cars) that we haven't seen in many years and many old friendships were rekindled.
The lodge was packed with FABACians and we all enjoyed an afternoon of food and reminiscing. As the afternoon wore on, we pressed our senior member, Jim Bleakney, into cutting the cake. A book was passed around for all to sign and I read 50 (give or take) signatures in it. I'll list them as soon as can figure them all out.
A big thanks to Dianne and Elva for wrangling the food, cooking dogs and ensuring everything was ready. There was a mystery gent who just stepped in, washed all the dishes then left.....? Thanks to you Sir....whomever you were.
Ernst arranged for the lodge. It's a great place and we should come up with a reason to visit there again. Thanks, Ernst!
There will be pictures posted over the next few days and we've started on a 25th video.
More to come on that.
Rob E.
I highly recommend that we take this opportunity to put names to faces of FABAC members old and new. First names only. Send them in and supply names referring to the photo numbers underneath.

As I watched the rain pound down this morning I was struck with an idea. I'm challenging
If you haven't done it already, it's time to shine up your LBC or LFC for our upcoming FABAC 25th Anniversary celebration. We're 25 years old. How great is that?
We met at one of our regular spots, the Carnation Restaurant in Oromocto. Despite that PITA bridge closure we had an almost record breaking crowd show up.
Gary opened with a pair of fives—no wait—wrong night.
May’s mtg will be at the Carnation Chinese Restaurant in the Days Inn, 60 Braydon Blvd, Oromocto. I’ve booked the private dining room for 5:30 on Wednesday, May 20th. With the room accommodating a maximum of 25 people, pls confirm your attendance online no later than noon this coming Tuesday.
FYI, Gary & I plan to drive through Maugerville making a short stop at Moxon’s Country Pumpkin for some of their delicious cookies before crossing the Burton Bridge to get to Oromocto. If anyone wants to join us, post so online and we will arrange to meet at the Ramada for a 4:30 departure.Today's run (a drive actually, it would be a looong way to run) took five, then six cars down to Spinney's sea food take-out in St. Martins. The weather was excellent (it's about time too) and only got warmer as we wandered down the not-horrible 102 heading south. The ferries at Evandale and Belleisle Bay provided fun little breaks, just long enough to stretch one's legs and chat a bit.
For your enjoyment, a run is offered. Taking place this coming Sunday, the 17th of May, a trip is planned to attend lunch at Spinneys:(https://www.facebook.com/p/Spinneys-Seafood-Market-100057512795943/).
I just received this included announcement of the passing of Lise Hoffman, wife of Alex Hoffman. Both of whom were just wonderful people who for years actively participated in our club. I, like many of you, would have many fond memories of Lise and Alex.
Great day for driving, great company and wonderful conversation. The reason there are no photographs—too busy talking with everyone. I would like to thank Gary Arsenault, Gary Hetherington, Chris Daigle and Ernst for coming along on the first road trip of the year. There were 2 MGBs, 1Triumph, 1 BMW and a Mazda.
The Hilltop (an increasingly popular spot with us) was the scene of much merriment as spring did it best to (finally) break through.
IMPORTANT: Please respond if you plan to attend this meeting. I have to confirm numbers by Monday. gararsenault@gmail.com
Our March meeting will be held at the new and improved Namaste's Bistro (formerly the Namaste restaurant located in the Capital Curling Rink). Its new location on 5 Acorn St. is located off Bishop Drive near Hanwell Rd.
I’ve been planning to go to a long-standing car show on Yarmouth, NS this summer. The show starts on the evening of July 10th with a downtown parade and the car show on July 11th from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. My plan is as follows:
Please let me know if you are interested.
