Johanna's report on the Sugar Run

Well, we had a truly lovely time at Dumfries Maples. Bruce and I were of course one of the last to arrive as we live the closest. I can only say in our defense that we did say 11 o’clock and you keeners were there before eleven.
The twelve of us chowed down on pancakes, sausages, eggs, and bacon, and drank volumes of coffee and tea. Bob E said he brought a piece of a British car but I thought it looked more like a part of a British toilet. However, as no one else came remotely close to bringing even a mudflap of a British car, Bob won the surprise of a British car diary which Bruce had dug out of our de-cluttering bins. We discussed the pros and cons of a woman replacing Jeremy Clarkson for Top Gear, spoke of possible trips, and for some reason (probably Bob’s fault) had a lengthy and somewhat revolting discussion (we were eating at the time) about various sea sickness and car sickness episodes in our lives. We also compared the listing quality of destroyers, the Grand Manaan Ferry, and cargo ships, especially overloaded ones.

Which brings me to my next story. David Nielsen says that it will earn me a place on THE WALL OF SHAME. Nevertheless, I will be brave and tell you that, while I had in a moment of enthusiasm volunteered to take on the Grand Manaan trip organization, I am going to renege on that offer. To do it properly (and that is the only way to do something) I would want to go to Grand Manaan on a test run. Bruce and I had thought of doing that on bicycles, but because I am back at work for six months, I am back to the misfortune of only having weekends available to me and they are already very booked. So I humbly accept my appointment to the WALL OF SHAME and ask someone else to take on that excursion.

Which brings me to Jim and Ellie, who in a moment of weakness and family loyalty chose to go to a basketball game instead of joining us for pancakes. They too would have earned a spot on said WALL OF SHAME, but family does trump FABAC, even though FABAC has become an extended family to us all.

All in all it was a lovely time and I only wish I had thought to take a photo of Bob’s British car part.

BobE's report on the Sugar Run

The first run of the season wasn't so much a run as it was an 'eat' (can I use eat as a noun David?) (Sure, Bob. The English language is dynamic—ever-changing.)
Under beautifully sunny skies and almost warm temps, we all met at the Dumfies Maple syrup shack and filled up with more cholesterol than folks our age should have.  We promised...absolutely promised to eat salads the rest of the weekend to compensate.  Rumours, gossip, and interesting news was exchanged with the most popular topic being the recent sacking of Clarkson from "Top Gear".  Of course we also made fun of and had sport with the reputations of everyone who wasn't there.   Bruce offered a prize to any person driving an LBC.  As promised, I'd brought along a part from my LBC which was offered instead.  As it was the closest item, I was presented with some stuff that he didn't want anymore. Be warned that the Pendrels are doing some spring cleaning and there will probably be numerous
more prizes offered.

AMP tour accommodations

I checked with The Best Western Glengarry and they are booked for Aug 22. probably the "Race Bunch". Suggest those interested in the Tour book their own reservations.
I have made mine at The Rainbow Motel....free cancellation. They have 10 rooms available.

Some thoughts on Top Gear Clarkson firing

http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/jeremy-clarkson-dropped-from-bbc-s-top-gear-1.3008688?cmp=rss

 I had a love/hate opinion of Clarkson.
He made some great documentaries over the years (Motorworld, Meet the Neighbours) and certainly was a big part of Top Gear's popularity but his ego has gotten the better of him.  I would have rather seen that producer knock Clarksons teeth out then break his arms just for good measure.  I'm sure that would have set the pompous arse back on his heels and taught him to control his temper and ego.  I'm sure TG will continue on it's own inertia and I have faith that the BBC will be smart enough to put a vivacious personality in his place.  The show is too much of a gold mine for them to screw it up.  It will be nice to see all three working together instead of screwing each other, or having to put up with Clarkson's incessant gay jokes and put downs.

Notes from March 18th FABAC meeting

An estimated fifteen members gathered at Isaac's Way Restaurant for our March meeting/eating.
In Gary's absence, David N conducted a short meeting.
  • Herb W was on hand to outline his suggestion for a run to the Atlantic Motorsport Park on a race weekend. Here is information from a follow-up email:
With the help of David Charters, I contacted Race Director, Debbie Miller and she gave me a list of this Summer's race weekends. In consultation with Gary who knew the dates for FABAC's summer events, we chose the August 23 race weekend.
The plan is to have a casual day trip from Fredericton to Truro on Aug 22, utilizing off TCH roads and arriving in Truro in time for an evening dinner and libations. Am investigating hotel/motel prices and will provide rate information later. ( Probably Best Western Glengarry) as it is typically the race preferred overnight. I will try to get improved rates.
Debbie advised we can have a display area for our cars near Turn 3 and permit lapping on race day between races. I have requested info re entry rates for us.
Return to Fredericton Sunday as a group or individually.
Plan to invite some of the 'old ' racers from our area to join us if interested.
More information on our site as I becomes available.

  • Two events coming up organized by the Foreign Auto Club:
The 2015 Radical Speed Sport at the Moncton Coliseum April 17, 18, 19
The ShowShine June 20th at Rotary St-Anselme Park
  • Since membership in the Foreign Auto Club is free, and since all Foreign Auto Club members receive regular notices of events by email, David recommended that FABAC members interested in those events join the club. http://foreignautoclub.ca/
  • Johanna recommended that we make a run to Dumfries Maples. In a follow-up email, she writes:
Bruce and I drove up to Dumfries Maples this morning for a wonderful pancake, sausage, and coffee breakfast and are going to suggest that the club come along next weekend for a repeat performance. Rather than try and co-ordinate a group for a mass pilgrimage up the hwy, we thought we could all meet there at eleven on Saturday March 28, 2015. The place is easy to find at 7520 Route 102.  506 575-8277.
Directions: follow the TCH west to Exit 253 (Kings Landing). Follow Route 102 North for 17 kms. It is on your left.

  • Kelvin reminded us of the now-annual St. Georges Day celebration in later April. More info later.
  • No location was selected for the next meeting, so we are open for suggestions.
Bob E was not in attendance, so these meeting notes are likely riddled with errors and omissions.
