Gaspé Trip Update

We met Tuesday to review the details of the Gaspé trip planned by and to be directed by John D. It's going to be a wonderful trip so if you were on the line in deciding to go now would be the time to make your reservations. As a clarification we will be leaving Fredericton on Friday Aug 16 from the Ramada Inn at 9am. We will be returning to Fredericton on Monday Aug 19th.

In addition, if the weather forecast is rainy weather while we're at Percé, then the trip will be cancelled. That determination will be made several days in advance to allow for reservation cancellations.

Call or email John if you have any questions.

Gaspé Gang lunch get-together

John has suggested that the gaggle of Gaspé travelers get together for lunch July 30th at 11:30 at the Riverside Resort and Conference Centre out near Mactaquac. We'll probably talk about finalized plans, but mostly use this as an excuse to eat yet again. John didn't mention that he was picking up the tab for this event, so I will assume that he isn't, and that you should bring your wallets.

Heat Wave Experiment

Someday I plan to make a Bimini sun top for my SS like this one for hot days:

Until then, I’ve tried this with my regular top by folding under the rear window. It works! Sun is kept off and wonderful flow of air. No apparent stresses or rubbing. The rear window doesn’t actually touch anything. All seems fine. And cool.

A visit

I stopped in for visit with Alex at Hospice House after breakfast this morning(Tuesday).  I found him quite alert and talkative.  We spent some time reminiscing about FABAC and British cars in general and talked about our families and some everyday things.  He said he will be ninety-one next October and he and Lise will also celebrate their 61st anniversary. Alex praised Hospice House, looks well and seems to be in a good place emotionally and spiritually.  I know that he enjoys company.

Greetings from the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix

The annual Alfa convention is being presented in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Vintage show and race. I estimate approximately 200-250 British cars on display. More pictures upon my return to Fredericton.

Thank You

May I thank Bob Earl for all the event write ups you have provided for FABAC both chronically and photographically.
Bob, you are a very dedicated FABAC member and a dependable reporter to our capable and generous web master.
Thank-you,
Jim Bleakney

UPDATE: Link to photos has been fixed.

Ralph looks awfully proud of himself in that picture doesn't he.  That's quite a roll of cash. Don't get too cocky there Ralph, even though you got the last 40 bucks out of my wallet, I still got the upper hand.  I checked the selling prices of those switches on Ebay last night after the show and I've got a good 300 bucks in the bag you sold me.  Who's got the last laugh now eh?
The rain held off, along with the heat and humidity and Saturday turn perfect for lazing under the trees and wandering through the cars.  FABAC again pulled off a good turnout despite a lack of preplanning.   Ralph almost sold his MGA several times and the Bleakney clan provided a quiet spot to hang out and eat fresh valley strawberries.  The folks from Saint John were scattered around the grounds and made repeated forays into the main camp for some good natured harassing.
Several FABACians who were stag for the weekend had stayed in the dorms for the weekend.  Everyone stayed tight lipped but the awkward silences, side glances and forced politeness hint at some late-night shenanigans.  There's some stories we'll have to coax out of the guys.

July 17th Wed Meeting and Run to Reversing Falls

There are 2 restaurants alongside one another by the Reversing Falls bridge. Both have views of the falls.

We have made reservations at the 14 1/2  Restaurant (450 Fallview Dr, 633 1412)  for a late lunch this Wed at 1:15. Reservations are for 20 but they can handle more. Please let us know if you are attending.

We picked this time as the restaurant closes mid afternoon on Wednesdays.

Here is the link to 14 1/2 Restaurants menu:
http://www.1412.ca/cafe-menu-saint-john-nb.html

For those interested in the recently built Skywalk located on the other restaurant here are some details:

The SKYWALK, entrance is via a rooftop pass.  Costs $15 plus tax for Adults, $12 plus tax for Seniors.  The pass is good for the day so that you can see both low and high tides.  For groups, the website suggests contacting sales@skywalksaintjohn.com or call 506-642-4400.

Let's meet at the Walmart parking lot at the far corner nearest Costco. We will depart there promptly at 11:30.

UPDATE; Rick and Terry’s BBQ Run

The weather is looking hopefully for a scenic drive on Thursday.  We will leave Riverside at 1030 and head north.  After a brief time on the TCH we will leave at exit 212 and head to the Meductic park for a bathroom and photo stop.  From there to Benton and another photo spot at a covered bridge.  When ready we will head to our home for food and relaxation.

Hope to see you this Thursday
Rick and Terry

A drive to Rick and Terry's place, near Woodstock.

Date: Thursday July 11, 2019 (with backup rain dates of July 12)

Meet: we will meet everyone at the Riverside Resort and Conference Centre at Mactaquac (French Village) at 1030h

Drive: - We will finalize the route closer to the day.  There is a lot of construction and some of last years route is closed.

Food: we will supply hamburgers, buns, and condiments - participants bring salads or desserts to share, and bring their own refreshments (we will have coffee, tea, water).  If anybody would like to BBQ something instead of a hamburger, please feel free to bring it along, there will be lots of BBQ space and time.

The drive will take approximately one and a half hours (a little over 100 km).

Return drive to Fredericton could take the same route, or could travel through Millville, or could travel down the TCH four lane.

I think that this plan has the three main components for a successful outing: drive, meet, eat.

Something IMPORTANT in common

These two cars have something in common that you may not have noticed immediately. Neither of them has a front license plate. Today, I received from a very reliable source — John D. — who received the information from a very reliable source, word that the RCMP has been instructed not to stop or ticket any New Brunswick vehicle for not displaying a front plate.

YAY!
Two related rumours:
  • Seasonal and Antique plates may be discontinued.
  • Possibly, we may be required to turn in the extra plate. ( That makes very little sense to me for a variety of reasons, not the least being these license plates don’t last very well anyway and it would be nice to have a spare.)

Report on Canada Day Run to St. Andrews

FABAC celebrated Canada's birthday with a grand run of epic proportions. A large contingent left Freddy under warming skies and where met by a huge group in Harvey that doubled the size of the swarm.  The trail of LBCs stretched out of sight as it wound it's way over hill and dale to eventually descend upon the Clam Digger takeout just outside St Andrews.  We decided to eat there in order to arrive in town just in time to take part in the car show.   The plan worked perfectly as one lone BDC braved the narrowed streets to park at Wenda & Don's place while the rest paraded onto Water St.  We filled the bulk of one block and the appreciative crowd ooh'ed and ah'ed (sp?) at the gorgeous little Brit cars.
The club extends a warm thanks to Wenda & Don both for their hospitality, and for playing tour guide through the crowded streets of St A.  We also got to meet their nicely restored Mini.

Note:  The photos show only a few FABACians as it was impossible to get everyone together for a group shot.  Herding cats anyone?
