Return of the Classic British sports car?

Interesting article in today’s copy of vintage racing news.  Looks like we could have our cake and get to the destination on time too.

Anyone for a run to Sussex this Sunday?

With beautiful top down weather forecast for this weekend, on Sunday we’re taking the “B” for a round trip to Sussex. If other FABACians would like to join us, we’ll leave Timmies on the Hanwell either at 11.00 am so we can have lunch somewhere in Sussex UPDATE: Lunch stop around 1.00 pm at Cambridge Narrows Holiday Restaurant on Bridge Drive, or at 2.00 pm for a shorter trip and an ice-cream en route. The departure time will be determined by a majority vote.
UPDATE: The vote is in and departure time will be 11:00 SHARP.
Please respond by phoning us at 449-0562.

Additional Upcoming FABAC Events (REVISED)

One of the items that came up at our last meeting but was not thoroughly discussed was Bob and Ann MacNally's proposal for a run to Woodstock with a restaurant stop at the new eatery, "The River".  They initially proposed June 14th for the run but that was the date we had scheduled for a trip to St Andrews. We agreed to hold the Woodstock run in reserve as we already 2 runs for June....St. Andrews June 14th run and the Foreign Auto Show and Shine in Dieppe on Saturday June 21st. Details on both these runs will follow soon. Bob and Ann are looking into an alternative date for the Woodstock run and hopefully we can decide on a date at our next FABAC meeting.  I know the Woodstock run will be a wonderful adventure and it's way past due to visit there as a group again. Thanks to both Bob and Ann for the proposal and the detailed planning they put into it.

On another note, a proposal that was passed along to me by Larry and Sandi but one I did not get to mention was an invite to bring and show our cars at the upcoming Stanley Fair this August. The fair organizers are anxious to have FABAC attend.  I think this is a wonderful opportunity to show our cars and also to continue our near annual tradition of visiting the village. The fair is Aug 16th, 17th and 18th Aug 15th, 16th and 17th. The organizers need to know if we are interested by next early week in time for their scheduled planning meeting.  They need a specific date and a count of cars attending.  If you are interested, please respond to the website. To start the ball rolling, I will be attending and hope that many others will as well.  This could become an annual event for us and what a better way to show our cars than in a well established and fun event as the Stanley Fair.

It's great to have these proposals.

 Thanks everyone,
      Gary

For discussion

Some of our meeting venues are able to provide a separate space for our group. How do you feel about the fact that often our FABAC meetings are held in public sections of restaurants?

Lots of car photos

Many photos of some very unique vehicles.  Caution!  You can spend some time here.

Report on May 21st Meeting

There are darn few times when I enjoy living in Burton and this evening was one of them.  After all that rain and cold weather the skies parted and gave us a beautiful spring sky.  I got to enjoy the undulating upper 102 then follow the meandering 105 upriver into Fredericton under this strange blue colour.
A large gathering gathered in Dimitri's tonight to feast on the finest (and most reasonably priced) Greek fare around. Larry started the meeting with an offer to host the second annual FABAC Fun Days at their place.  Vote for your preferred date of either 19 July or 23rd August.  Our webmaster will tally the votes.  (that's you David.  You weren't there to defend yourself so you got boned for the job). Gary recounted the three outings we've enjoyed so far but subdued the gang with news of the delay of our planned multi-club gathering later in the summer due to Jim's disposition.  On that point, Robert circulated a poster featuring Jim's car for all members to sign.  He'll get it to Jim with the clubs wishes for a speedy recovery. Dwight proffered the tour of the Huntsman museum in St Andrews for the 14th of June.  This will be an all day run encompassing lunch and supper.  As the days will be long at this time we should get home before dark. The Dieppe show-n-shine is scheduled for the 21st of June and a few of us are planning an over-nighter at the casino.  Contact the card shark - slot queen, Dianne at Scott's Nursery for details. Windsor was quickly discussed.  It looks to be another large contingent headed over. Finally, our next meeting was scheduled for June 18th at McGinnis's Landing.
We broke up much too early but I got to repeat my earlier drive, heading back downriver under still clear skies and warm-ish temperatures.
  Film at eleven!

FABAC Meeting/Eating Reminder

Dimitri's Greek restaurant on the 21st of May, usually 6:00.
I think even the weather is going to cooperate. LBCs out?
Thanks to Johanna for making the arrangements.

BATANS' Autojumble May 24th

Kelvin brought it to my attention that this is coming up soon. Good chance to buy/swap or sell just about any automobile parts or what-have-you. Check it out here on Kijiji.

Today's run in the rain report

Usually, runs in the rain are warm and damp forcing folks to continually wipe the insides of their windscreens.  Today it was just cold and rainy, forcing everybody to resort to their regular cars.  Sandra and Larry had ditched their Triumph at the rendezvous and scammed a ride with the Crumleys leaving one lone LBC to lead the pack.  Cocooned in a new (and watertight!) top with the heater warming the cabin I led all of two cars down the 102 towards Saint John.  The road seemed to be a mess of shattered pavement and frost heaves which made the trip down less than enjoyable.  We met up with a few others in Saint John and were finally joined at Lily Lake by Terry and Kim from the city.
Lunch at the Pavilion was excellent (which is why we go) and afforded the chance to spend a few hours chatting.
Click on any photo for a larger view.
Afterwards, Gary led most of the folks on a short tour around the lakes before heading home on the quick highway 7.  Ever the hardcore, I put my top down and headed back up the 105.  I was determined to enjoy at least a little bit of true LBC driving despite the rain.  I was rewarded with dry roads, an overcast but rainless sky and it just seemed to be much more pleasant with the top down.  The pavement didn't even feel as broken and pockmarked. Maybe the sensations brought on by having the roof open masks the bumps?

Britain's biggest classic car collection up for sale.

A dentist who has amassed this incredible collection is now prepared to part with it for a cool £100m.
John B's is in for half if another FABACian will join him in the deal. ;-)

Update on This Sunday's Run to Saint John

Meet at the Timmies on Smythe St. for an 11:00 AM *sharp* departure.
Proceed across the Princess Margaret Bridge and take the 105 downriver.
Cross the river at Burton where I will meet the gang as we proceed towards Saint John on the old 102.  There will be a short stop at the gas station by the intersection of 102 and the Trans Canada.

We'll follow the Grand Bay/Westfield route into Saint John and...
  • turn left onto Manawoginish Rd at Purdy's corner.
  • Simm's corner, turn left onto Bridge St.
  • turn right just past the reversing falls bridge into the large parking lot where we will be met by Gary and any other 'Saint Johnians'.

Because the city is busy with lots of lights we won't try to stay together through the downtown so please jot this down:
  • proceed right out of the parking lot onto Chelsey Drive.
  • turn right onto Hilyard which become Paradise Row not long after.
  • turn left onto Rockland then almost immediately right onto Burpee Ave.
  • turn right onto Mt Pleasant Ave.
  • right onto Arrow Walk Ave then immediately left into the Pavilion road.
  • the pavilion is on the water to the left 250 m from the main road.

May 18th run to Lily Lake for lunch.

It looks like we won't get any serious flooding which means that the good ole 102 will be available for our motoring pleasure.  To that end, the Bistro at Lily Lake in Saint John has been booked for an afternoon lunch.  Departure time will be announced this week but I imagine we'll leave Freddy around 11:00 to arrive in Saint John before 1:00 PM. Hopefully the Saint John gang can join in(?) 'Southern' FABACians should call the Lily Lake restaurant in the morning and indicate that you'll be joining the group from upriver.
Yes, I will lead and no, I won't get us lost.... ...again.

Beautiful Music

Dave, don’t be distracted by the beginning of this video. J  Some very quick images of very beautiful cars and some lovely sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liqoMjRT81A

Wonderful! I recommend playing it through a high quality stereo system. We should be able to put together a FABAC version.

Today's "Secret" Run Report

Click on the Jag for a larger photo.
Today, under coolish but sunny skies, the two 'Jagboys' braved the close-to-flooded roads through Jemseg and enjoyed a relaxing (and spirited) drive down to the BelleIsle Secondary School where we showcased our restored cars for their automotive shop class.
We spent a couple of hours describing the process of restoration, and the fun and challenges of owning and driving a classic car.  The burgeoning technicians where quite enthusiastic and it came as no surprise that a few of them own their own classics.
With the visit over, Joe and I continued along the 710 eventually stopping for lunch in Cambridge Narrows where we enjoyed great home cooking and languished over tea for some time.
Continuing home along the 105 I contemplated on how enjoyable a drive it was.  The 710 will have to be revisited this summer when everything is green again.  We've promised the cafe owner a visit.

A health update

As many of you learned at our recent FABAC get-together, Jim W has been dealing with some serious health issues for some time now. Many of us were shocked to hear that complications led to his recent hospitalization. He suffered kidney failure and pneumonia, and they nearly lost him.
The good news is that Jim was discharged from the hospital today and has started on the road to recovery. While Jim and Lorraine appreciate your kind thoughts, they would rather not receive calls or visitors at this time.

Gary spotted this ad for a 1963 Sunbeam Alpine on Fredericton Kijiji.

Update on the British Motoring Festival (Windsor, NS)

FABACians who have previously participated in this event have received an email updating them on this fine event.
Some points extracted from the email:
  • The banquet will now be held in one of the air conditioned dining halls instead of the cafeteria.
  • They are not using PayPal for the registrations, so mailed cheques only please.
  • The registration form should soon be available at the British Motoring Festival website
