OK Frederictonians, think back!

FABAC member Mark Jones, now living in Ontario, makes this request:
Do you remember the names and location of the British car dealerships that once called Fredericton home? Also any interesting memories about visiting the dealerships. Also does anyone have pictures of the dealerships that they could share? Post a comment.

I bought a new 1966 Sunbeam Imp from ? Abernethy who had the British Leyland dealership on the northside. Was it called Union Motors -- it was on Union Street. I think it was his daughter who looked after the office, accounts, etc. Small operation(they all were back then) and nice people.

In the early 70s I had my Spitfire serviced at a BL dealership located in the basement of the building that used to house the Scoop & Save. S&S is now located next door in a new building. The entrance to the garage was from the west side of the building. In the early 80s my business was located in the same space and I recall seeing a few BL parts wedged in the ceiling truses above the new dropped tile ceiling of my offices. Can't remeber the dealership name.

In 1974 I was using a Land Rover rented from Hathaway Motors in Bathurst and had it serviced on the northside at a garage that was located where Atlantic Rentals is now. It might have been Union Motors that Dave mentions. During one service visit the LR was stolen by a couple of young fellows from the garage yard at night. They left it perched on a rock just off what is now the old TCH a little down river from Fredericton. The rock pretty much destroyed the front end and opened up the oil pan like a can opener. In the late 90s, my business rented a few pick-up trucks from Hathaway and I found out that the old LR was still in use by the Hathaway family at their summer cottage.

Hi All,
The person at Union Motors was Oxborn Abernathy, usually called 'Ob'. I remember the BL dealer on Prospect St, but forget the name.

Was there not a Miller Motors on the corner of King and Northumberland, where the Irving Station is today?

Hi Folks,
I purchased my first MG a brand new '63 Midget from Cluff and Smith located on Regent Street at the tracks in the building later occupied by Belyea Insurance which today I believe houses a law firm.It was a sub dealer of a Woodstock business. I think subsequently (all be it a little fuzzy) that Johnny Miller opened a dealership where the present Irving Station sits on King.
As to the garage on Prospect St. mentioned by Dwight, I am quite certain it was Tramco Motors, owned and or operated at one time, I believe, by Ernst van Groenewoud whom many of you will know. He use to do for many of us what Ian Benton does now (Keep us on the road)!!! Ernst has operated Kingsclear Mushrooms now for some years.
I hope this has opened up a little more grey matter and someone else can fill in the missing parts,
