YAY!!! The province of New Brunswick has announced an incentive plan for purchases of electric vehicles. Up to $5000, plus up to $5000 federally, plus 50% towards home recharging station!

I’ll be purchasing in 2022. The new battery technology should be pretty common across all makes by then. Keeping an eye on what will be available. Very excited!

UPDATE: Picking up on what Larry said in his recent comment, read this very interesting CBC article that explains how EVs could provide solutions during power outages in storms and much more:

May be joining you on that idea.

Sorry I am still not convinced on electric vehicles.Hydro companies are already talking about increased electric charges for car recharging cars, some reckon may increase from 11c to 24c per kilowatt hour. I also cannot see how the electric grid can cope if large amounts change over to electric. Kelvin

and then there is the taxes on motor fuels - they will have to be replaced with taxes on electricity on vehicle charging. The current economics on EVs will change.

A few thoughts:
I don't think there will be a tsunami of EV purchases in the immediate future so I think we are unlikely to see immediate electricity cost increases. The demand for recharging an EV is not much different from running an electric clothes dryer—and it is possible to have the charging take place on off hours like 2:00AM.

Since we do very little travel other than trips to town, I had in mind solar panels on the garage roof so that I would be paying nothing for EV charging.

My choice for an EV is more 'green' based than money saving.

I shall keep the Morgans going to make sure that I at least contribute a little effluent into the atmosphere. ;-)

I have heard of jurisdictions that either have or are planning to have extra taxes on EVs to offset the lack of taxes built into gas purchases. My belief in all of this taxation is similar to the fact that everyone pays for education and health regardless of whether they have children or poor health. Everyone should pay for education, health, roads, infrastructure because everyone benefits from all of those things indirectly.

Many new EVs are coming with the capability for V to G, which is vehicle to grid. This means that when renewable energy, i.e. solar and wind, is abundant, vehicles can be charged by the grid. When there is high demand on the system, the flow can be reversed and the batteries can contribute to electrical demand.
This could be very significant in the future. Cheers, Larry

Think eleventeen times before investing in an electric car. "Cost nothing to run and never needs servicing." is BS...

The reason that made the news is that it is such a rare event. Overall satisfaction by Tesla owners is among the highest for any brand. There is no question that EVs require less maintenance than IC cars. No one claims they never need servicing- i.e. tires, brakes, suspension.

Please hold further comments for Tuesday morning in the park. This should make for some lively discussion.
