Weeks later, and an email arrives with the correct answer:
I believe the item is a grease gun coupler that locks onto a zerk (grease fitting) and provides a tight, and usually, leak -proof connection.
You would have needed one if you had a recessed grease fitting or one that was just awkward to access.

It's a doohickey!
Looks similar to the tool I use to set my valves. Square end sits on socket and level is the handle to tighten/loosen nut.
