Fredericton Car Show

Here are a few photographs from the Fredericton car show today as you can tell. I put in one or two American cars, but I showed the British cars. Erin's 1975 Triumph TR6 was given a prize for one of the top 15 people's choice awards at the show in Fredericton.

Great Cycle Challenge Week One

Week one of the Great Cycle Challenge completed. I have ridden 107 kms and with your help, raised $941 towards children’s oncology services at the Sick Kids Hospital.

It’s been a bit of a struggle as I am attending an osteoarthritis clinic to prepare me for a hip replacement 🥺. As a result, I bought an electric bike and use it for some of the longer (and hillier) rides. I was feeling a bit of an imposter, but one of the other riders told me it’s not a competition - we are all taking part because of the kids.

And Isaac, my superhero🦸‍♂️ is doing brilliantly after three years of intense treatment. He now plays soccer four times a week. If I did this only because of him, it would be so worth it. But 1700 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Canada.

If you would like to support the event, please go to www.GreatCycleChallenge.ca, select donate, and click on my name. All donations will receive a charitable donation tax receipt.

Thank you for your support.
Johanna

Save the Date

Sandi and Larry will be hosting one of their periodic FABAC pot luck lunches at our home in Stanley on Saturday, September 13 (rain date Sunday, September 14).  As usual, there will be fun, games and prizes.  More details to come in the following weeks.

Stanley Fair Event - Saturday Aug 16th

We're hoping to get as many FABAC members as possible out for the annual Stanley Fair Saturday Aug 16 with a rain date on Sunday Aug 17. You will remember we made this one of our community events to attend on an annual basis. The Stanley Fair organizers and the folks attending the fair have always appreciated our attendance. We've also had a lot of fun attending ourselves with all the displays and events.  Added to the fun will be the return of a midway. They also have a restaurant on the fairgrounds and several food trucks there. All with great food. So please try to make it if you can, it's for a good cause. It also gives our club some exposure that will hopefully result in new members which we need.

Here's a link to their site showing all the activities:

https://www.facebook.com/events/1842254369972314/

I'll be leading the group to Stanley on Saturday (Sunday pending weather) with a departure from the Northside Canadian Tire at 10:15. We'll travel via Route 148 to Taymouth and onto English Settlement Rd to Stanley. This in itself is a beautiful drive along the Nashwaak River onto the English Settlement Rd.

You may want to bring foldable chairs, sun protection and water.

 Hope to see you there,

      Gary

Great Cycle Challenge

Tomorrow, I take on my 8th Great Cycle Challenge to raise funds for the Sick Kids Hospital Oncology programme. Over the years I have ridden 4289 km and, with your help, raised $17,001.

Why do I do it? Because in Canada, about 1700 children are diagnosed with cancer each year.
I have been incredibly fortunate to have received exceptional medical care during my own experience with cancer, and I want children to benefit as I have. I want children going through cancer to have the chance to bike along the river and through parks as I will be doing. I want them to have a chance to grow up and enjoy a full life.
Over the month I will report daily on face book and weekly on FABAC. There will be hard days, and amusing stories. Please journey with me, and if you would like to donate, please go to:
www.GreatCycleChallenge.ca, click on donate, and enter my name. Thank you for your support.

Addendum: On that page you will find an update on my ride hero Isaac, who after three years of intensive treatment is now a cancer-free thriving 14 year old, playing soccer four time a week.

Thank you,
Johanna

John and Ernst's P.E.I. Trip

We just got back from the Island . We dove 1500 km. Great roads on the Island. Ernst and I went to a car show in Summerside on Friday night and we were well received by the people that were attending the show. Everyone seemed to like the British cars. Ernst and I stopped in to see Barb and Gary and they gave us a great meal. We had a great trip.
Cheers

Lunch at the Lunch Box, Harvey

It was lovely to host FABAC’ians today. So glad that the weather was perfect and that you all enjoyed lunch at the Lunch Box.
Johanna and Bruce
Ps The gentleman on the wheeler is our neighbour Jeff who came over looking for some of his cows.

Friday morning drive and lunch!

It’s finally time for an outing to HARVEY.  This Friday, August 1 the weather looks great for a morning run with lunch at the new canteen in Harvey.  Best fish and chips around.

I suggest a gathering at Bruce and Johanna’s place any time after 0930 where coffee and cookies will help you through the morning.  Civic Number 670 on Hwy 3, about 30 minutes from town.

Then a departure to Harvey to arrive about 1130 at the Lunch Box for dining al fresco.  Lots of picnic tables available.  Bring cash as they are purposely retro and don’t use credit.  Afterwards I suggest the option of a drive to Magaguadavic (75 km loop) for those interested.

UPDATE on Trip to P.E.I.

Ernst and I will be leaving my house (104 NB-102, Burton, NB E2V 3A1) at 9:00 am sharp on Wednesday, 30th of July. We'll be meeting up with Saint John members at the Tim’s in Salisbury, New Brunswick around 10:30am. Then leave to go to Summerside PEI.
Cheers,
John

Meeting report July 16th

A small but noisy and rambunctious crowd of FABACians gathered at one of our favourite haunts, Dimitri's, for dinner and gabbing. While we'd all been looking forward to trying out the balcony, the heat, humidity, fire smoke and blistering sun chased us inside.
Once seated we discovered that I, yours truly was the only one fitted with a tie.  Even Robert Young was untied, leaving me no choice but to declare myself the winner of July's Tie challenge.
Gary and Barb were somewhere else doing something obviously not as important as the monthly meeting, meaning that once again, I was in charge.

    WE HAS OUTINGS COMING!
Yes, stuff is gonna be happening this summer.
  • The Stanley Fair (oldest agricultural fair in North America at 175 years old!) will be on Aug 16th. Larry will be leading a group drive from the North side.  Watch here for details.
  • Bruce announced that the Harvey Canteen is open.  He will be arranging a run for us.  Watch here for details.
  • Johanna is planning an outing to the King's Head Inn.  Once again, watch here for details.
The next monthly dinner will be at El Mariachi off of Forest Hill Rd.  We all enjoyed it, particularly all the elbow room and excellent food.   Aug 20th.

FABAC July Meeting Wednesday, 16th

At Dimitri's Greek Restaurant
5:30
Should be a hot time in the old town!

My Tesla tried to kill me today using Full Self Driving (Supervised)

Most of you in FABAC have traveled from the Northside towards the Westmorland Street bridge, let's say from Shoppers. We have this long onramp curving to meet the two lanes going south on the bridge. Watch the first video to see the view out the front. Full Self Driving is barreling along like nothing could happen. Then, just when the Tesla thought it would join the right lane, I slammed on the brakes—look at the traffic going by that it was planning to 'merge' with!!!!!.
Now, look at the second video to see the camera that is looking back to the left—what you would see if you were looking back over your left shoulder. Did it plan to 'mate' with that white truck?!!! No one would have had a chance to avoid me because both lanes were busy. What a pileup it could have been!!!
Full Self Driving (Supervised) can be scary and needs to be constantly supervised. I just subscribed for a month to see how it might have improved since last year—waste of money. Although, it sure knows how to park in any situation.

Rusagonis Show & Shine

I would like to thank Joe and Tim for showing up. There were around 60 cars at the show. I had a good time. I think Joe and Tim also had a good time. I have other photographs of many of the cars in the show. But the only ones that interest me were the British ones,
Cheers,
John

The "RED BEAST LIVES"

Finally after almost 23 years my 1972 MGB is roadworthy.  Always some details to finish such as front grill, soft top and other items.  Paint colour is Dodge Viper red.
It has a live growl to the exhaust and wants to go. I am in the break-in period for the first 500 miles.  Now with 3, which one should I drive??

Regards,
Tim Ross

This should interest FABACians

I was asked if our club would be interested in going to this car show on July 12. I told the person that I would pass it on and see if members would be interested in attending. I am planning on going for something to do.
Cheers
John D.

Road trip to Noah’s Ark Cafe

Ernst and I are just getting back. We had a great drive on Rte 104. I made a choice to take Rte 580 to Bristol. I would not recommended it—it is made more for pick up trucks and SUVs. But on arriving at the café, we met up with one of the new club members that Ernst is trying to bring into the club from Bristol. He took us for a drive around Moose Mountain and Bath. It was a nice drive around the country side. Ernst and I later had breakfast at the cafe. That is all they make. It was very good and a great price. Under $9.00. I think It would be a great fall trip. We could either go to the café or check out the railway dining car restaurant in Bristol. I am not sure what their hours are. I will check into it. If anyone is interested in doing something in mid September.
Cheers,
John

How about a Saturday lunch at Noah's Ark?

Ernst and I are meeting at the Mall at Mouth of Keswick near the RCMP station for 9:15 am and leaving around 9:45 to the Noah's Ark Café. Open 8:00 to 2:00.(https://www.noahsarkcafe.com/)
Cheers
John

This was posted today on the Jag Lovers forum. I don't feel so bad after reading it.

".....And finally I am putting my Jag on the road (finally) after 42 years and the H4 Cibie lights appear to have a faint coating on the inside probably due to age and I am wondering if these lights can be washed w/ a solution that will not harm the reflector."

Mosport & Field of Dreams Car Show

Here’s a YouTube video of the Field of Dreams Car Show at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport to all us old guys). A walkaround of the show and pits, some of the vintage racing and a bit of the track laps for the show participants.  This was a two day event. The initial plan was for me to take Little Red, our Miata, and go with my son who lives in Kingston.  Plans changed when my grandson expressed an interest in going as well.  We had a very good time and I got to lap Mosport in a new Volkswagen Jetta.  Not quite like the Miata but still a good experience.  A week on the road and I covered 2500 kilometres.

Report on FABAC June Meeting

The magnificent Riverside Grill & Bar near the damn dam was the site of June's dinner/meeting.

With the condition of the damn dam's bridge in question, many folks made long and circuitous paths around it only to find later that it was indeed open. *sigh*

Gary opened the meeting part as per usual.
  • Johanna was thanked for arranging the evening's venue.
  • 19 cars showed up at the recent Father's Day outing at Shannex.  It was an enjoyable event and there was a good bit of talk about making this an annual event for the group.
  • Ernst V. gave a long turn-by-turn playback of the recent tour around Cape Breton with John D.  Of particular interest was his description of 'tourist' roads (according to Tourism NS) that were potholed messes and devoid of gas stations.  They sound like good spots to avoid.
  • Ernst is also chatting with folks in the Hartland and Centerville area about a possible visit.
  • Gary mentioned an upcoming show in Rusagonis.
  • Everyone was reminded about the weekly car gatherings in downtown Freddie affectionately known as 'Freddie Beach'.
  • Bruce again talked about an event in Harvey as the pub nears completion..
  • The gentlemen in the club are reminded of Joe's ongoing tie challenge.  We're encouraged to wear one to the monthly meetings with points given for originality.  This 'ties' in with Joe's extensive collection of Beatles themed ties.  Points are also earned for successfully identifying the song alluded to on his tie.
  •  Next months dinner is tentatively scheduled for Dimitri's on Queen Street.  The upper terrace is now open.

FABAC June Meeting

When: June 18th at 5:30
Where: Riverside Grill & Bar (near Mactaquac Dam)
Hoping for top-down weather.

John and Ernst's Great Adventure

 Chapter one:
So far, no rain. We are having a great trip.

Chapter Two:
We are just getting back now after driving 2010 km round-trip. The roads were not bad. The only problem with Nova Scotia is that small towns have no gas stations. We were driving anywhere from 125 to 230 km Per gas station. If we were to let the gas gauge go below a1/4 of a tank.I learned mistake just after leaving Amherst  with an 1/4 a tank and only a gallon of fuel. Not knowing that there are no gas stations from Amherst to Pugwash. As they were either out of business or out of gas themselves. We met up with a vintage Car Club from Antigonish. They were driving from Port Hawkesbury NS to Canso NS. All and all we had a wonderful trip .
Cheers,
Ernst and John
