Alpine Tiger

A web site that Phil recently sent me led me to a spot which will certainly interest Bruce and probably others. Check it out here.

Did You Know?

Did you know that we get approximately 1000 visits per month here at FABAC.org?
Did you know that FABAC has over 200 registered members?
Wouldn't it be great to get every member out for a photo-shoot?!

A barn with a difference!

Phil O. put me onto this online e-magazine(it's free) and I have been enjoying it. Check out this collection in the latest issue.

An advisory for those registering for PEI International Motoring Festival

Gary A. just received confirmation from the PEI International Car Show sponsors that we have a reserved FABAC space for our members. Anyone registering or who has registered should indicate to them that you are with the FABAC.

Since the Saturday Fly-In is off, let's drop in on this

Jim Mck. passes on the details:

World Class Auto Car Show (433 Bishop Drive) is this Saturday (rain or shine) and owner Bob Wheaton has asked me to pass the info on to the club. The show runs from 9am-3pm; a barbeque with donations going to charity.
Also the Thursday night car show is now being held at HOME DEPOT PARKING LOT.

Lots of showers these days but remember, our cars may be sweet, but they aren't made of sugar--check the wipers and get out and drive. - David

PEI Friday Night Event Is Back On

This blog item started out this way and we do appreciate your feedback:
Since it appears that there will not be the traditional Friday night event preceding the PEI car show, you should post a suggestion and get a discussion started. Just click on "comments" at the bottom of this posting. What do you think would be a good activity, meeting place or run, for that Friday evening?
However...
IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Friday night event appears to be back on. Read the latest comment from Ralph H. by clicking on "comments". You should note that it is mandatory that you register for the Friday event by July 19th if you plan to attend. The details are all in the letter. This is a separate event from the International Motoring Festival which takes place Saturday and Sunday.

PLEASE NOTE: EVENT CANCELLED -- SCOTTSFIELD 32nd ANNUAL AIRPARK FLY-IN

Ernie called to give the bad news that this year's fly-in had to be cancelled--too much rain creating a soft runway and more rain in the forecast. I'll keep the info on for next year. :-)

This is always a great event and they do like seeing FABAC in attendance.

Club members who would like to drive as a group meet at the Esso Service Station across from Mactaquac Park power boat marina on Route 105.

'ELECTRICAL THEORY BY JOSEPH LUCAS '

Can be found here.

Although this may be a review for many of our members, it is an enjoyable review. (Thanks to Don Mac. for passing it on.)

More unkind comments about Lucas can be found here like:

Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck.

An interesting Web Site for Movie/Car Fans

Search any make of car on this site and it will tell you in which movies it appeared or was featured.

Notes from June meeting

President Gary welcomed the 25 members present at the June meeting which was held at the Delta Dip patio restaurant under warm and sunny skies. He thanked Dennis and Bob E for arranging the highly successful McAdam tour earlier this month. Certainly a job well done!

Gary then welcomed new club member Bob L, a former LBC owner who just recently acquired a spiffy 1985 Citroen 2CV6 (and no, Bob tells us that the model name does not denote that it is a 6 cyl). You should have seen faces around the table light up when Bob mentioned that he had a `pit`and tools.

Johanna distributed a number of brochures advertising the upcoming Don Messer Centennial celebration. More information to follow on this site.

Some members are planning to attend the upcoming Antique Carriage and Auto days next weekend at Kings Landing. Their website has more information.

There was discussion about FABAC members planning to meet up on the Friday evening of the PEI car show in July. Watch this website for more on this.

BATANS will be overnighting in the Fredericton area on August 2nd as part of their Rexton Show tour. Curry and Sherry have invited them to their home for a get together and they would like FABACians to also attend. More info to follow. And still on the Rexton weekend, Dwight informs that the O`Leary Inn in Richibucto has vacancies on this weekend if anyone is interested in attending.

Jim B reminds everyone that organizers of the annual fly-in breakfast at Granite Hill have once again invited club members to attend. This year promises to be a special show in recognition of the 100th year of flight. Gary to coordinate our participation. Watch this site for details.

After the meeting, a group of about 8 cars motored to the Keswick Ridge area to partake in David N`s wonderful treat of ice cream as a fine way to end a beautiful (almost summer) evening.

Although we forgot to discuss a location for our next meeting, an executive decision was made later and we will be getting together at McGinnis Landing. Jim B to coordinate.

Ethanol Warnings

This from Phil O:
"I'm attaching an interesting piece from Moss Motors about ethanol and its effects on older cars and their fuel systems. Ethanol isn't really too much of an issue here but I've seen a lot of it in New England, southern US and in Ontario and Quebec recently. I expect we'll see more of it soon."

From Dave and Pat in Norway

Our good friends have been all over the world and have photos to prove it. Their latest escapade is in Norway where they are proceding to set up International branches of FABAC. ;-)
Here's their e-mail:

Hi Dave:
We were out touring around Kristiansand Norway and I came across a MGB driving up main street. I stopped him in a crosswalk so I could take this picture. Later in the day we were heading for an historic group of buildings and came across this Jag (for Bob E). A short time later the MGB came by again with the top down, we chatted with the driver and told him about our club and said his photo may appear there. It is amazing to see British sports cars only a few degrees south of the Arctic circle. We will be cruising some fiords tomorrow and then on Thursday we will be up at North Cape which is the most northerly part of Europe. It is 11:30 at night now, and still light out. When we get to North Cape it will be 24 hours of sun light.

All for now, take care.
Dave and Pat

Now let's see--I need trailer registration, lights...hmmmm.

Barrel Races at Woodstock--Our Girls Rock!

Jim W. led our little group of four cars(Jim W in his Morgan Plus 4, Jim and Shirley in their Z4, Vic in his Miata and David in his Morgan Plus 4 SS) to Connell Park in Woodstock where we had a chance to see mother and daughter show their stuff in a barrel racing competition. The visual WOW factor when you see Lorraine and Jenny doing what they love on two beautiful Arabians takes more than photos to capture. Jenny blew away the whole field in both Youth and Open classes.

Click here for barrel race photos.

Here's a short video of Jenny in action:

Here's a short video of Lorraine in action:

And here are some fine photos from Vic. D.

Saturday afternoon project - Ramps

If you have ever tried to work under a car with 4" clearance, then you appreciate things like pits, hoists, jacks, axle stands, etc. Although I have a pair of standard metal ramps that are fine if you just want to get under the front, but I thought how nice it would be if a person had four wooden ramps that could be placed ahead of the wheels and drive up on them for a nice 10" clearance. A little thinking, and a look at my considerable pile of rough-cut 2 by 8s and a plan emerged. Then I thought I should check the Internet for better ideas--didn't find a better idea but found an identical plan--nothing new under the sun. A little measuring, a little sawing and a little nailing and voila! (Yes, each of those pieces was cut at a 45º angle--an improvement over the plans I saw on the Internet.)

Did an oil change immediately after competing the project and was thoroughly satisfied. Decided to do a little washing as well and was happy to not have to bend over for every part of the job. Ah, the little pleasures in life. :-)

Watch Lorraine W. and Jenny in Barrel Racing Competition - this Sunday

Sorry for the late notice but here's the info:

Here's another excuse for us to get those Little British Cars on the road.
Jim W. will be leading the way for those interested in seeing the action.
Meet on Sunday at Tim Hortons up on the Hanwell Road in time to leave at 9:30a.m.
Event starts at 11:00 at Connell Park Raceway in Woodstock.

You can learn more here about this N.B./P.E.I. Barrel Horse Association (www.npbha.org) event.

A Report from our own Travelin' Phil O.

Hi Dave:
Just reading the trip report about the McAdam run.  Looks like it was a good trip.  I decided last Wednesday to take a run of my own that I've been thinking about for a while.  Left Freddy Friday morning and arrived in South Boston, VA for the
Heacock Classic Gold Cup Historic Races at Virginia International Raceway Saturday about noon Saturday. I met up with a friend who ia crew chief of an MGB in vintage racing team and spent a day and a half at VIR.  Even got to do a couple of fairly hot "parade laps" in an MGB v8.

http://www.virclub.com/2009-events

A lot of interesting and rare cars here.  Took lots of photos.  I'm attaching a few that I've reduced in size; not sure if you have high speed.  Note the ones captioned Super Dave!

I'm in Durham, NC now for the next few days.

Post some of the pics if you like Dave but thought I'd share them with you......the yellow Morgan and the AeroMax especially (it's for sale if you want it.........I'll be in their shop Wednesday and can drive it home for you.  :~)

take care
Phil

...and this followup note from Phil:
I spent this morning in a combination machine shop and British and European car repair/restoration shop in Danville, VA.  Walking into the repair side is enough to give a car guy heart palpitations and cause him to drool!   Everything here from a Subeam Imp, Arnolt-Bristol, various Lotus 7s and Elans, a Bentley, one off factory early seventies Mercedes Benz with AMG 8 liter v8, a BMW 507 that will be in the one million $$ range when finished, a Jag C Type, a Porche Speedster, several Minis, Lotus and Cooper race cars, an early 70s Ford Escort rally car that was driven to a world championshipa 1947 MG TC barn find in need of complete restoration and even several motorcycles.
I'll see if I can send some pics later.  Trying to stay out of the Nort Carolina heat and humidity for a while!

A Visit to the McAdam Train Station - What a day!

It's somewhat redundant to provide a write-up for this run since the WHOLE CLUB WAS THERE!  Waiting in the parking lot of Porter's restaurant on a fine (and getting finer) Saturday morning, we watched car after car roll up. Folks we haven't seen in ages were welcomed back into the fold, and others even had their kids driving the spare LBCs.  21 cars (twenty one!) headed towards McAdam down the good ole Hanwell.  At Harvey we were met by two more, and continued via a somewhat circuitous route.
The day couldn't have been better with warm temps and fluffy white clouds. I'd invited Ian along and let him drive on the trip out.  It's a nice change to be a passenger in my own car as it's driven by someone whom I know will take good care of 41 year old machinery. His enthusiasm overcame him from time to time as  he'd roar away from a stop (letting the lovely sound of that engine resonate off the woods) only to have to drive along at 40KPH while the others caught up.
Once in McAdam we lined up at the train station and were joined by yet two more FABACians.  Twenty five whole cars graced the station.  It was a sight to bring tears to one's eyes.
The club was treated to a tour and history lesson of the town's partially restored train station interspersed with humorous stories and anecdotes.  After a light lunch in the restored 50's style diner, the tour continued.
On the way home a quick stop was made in Harvey for ice cream.
The trip and tour was a huge success for the club and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.  We have added this tour to our repertoire with plans to return next year. We've also added a bit of FABAC lore with the introduction of 'railroad' pies. Watch for one at our next potluck.

An Invitation from Kings Landing

You may recall at our May meeting, information was relayed re a Fathers Day Weekend event at Kings Landing entitled "Carriages and Cars".
I have more information from them inviting us to display our British cars at the event on either or both June 20 and 21.
Any antique car owners coming to exhibit their treasure on wheels get a Kings Landing Family pass (2 adults, 2 children) for the day.

E-mail me to confirm your plan to participate before June 15th, 2009.

"Bring Dad out to experience the history of 'horsepower' in New Brunswick and the evolution of transportation from 19th to 20th century. Including a rare showing of Kings Landing's renowned carriage collection."

This might be traveling with you to McAdam

Assuming all goes well, the Morgan SS and I may use this opportunity to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Morgan cars. We've been spending a little time together in the garage dealing with a few small issues.

Details for this Saturday's McAdam Run

On Saturday, the 6th of June, FABAC will gather at Porter's Diner at 1761 Hanwell Rd.(which is about 5.8km from the intersection of the Hanwell and Rte 2 bypass).  We will depart at 9:15AM towards Harvey where there'll be a short TP stop. We will follow highway 3, route 630, then highway 4, arriving in McAdam at noon (or so).  There will be a tour of the restored train station followed by lunch at 1:00 PM.
We already have over 30 people signed up and urge anyone else to e-mail David soon if you plan to come.  Numbers must be turned in to the folks at McAdam.

Organized by Dennis W and Bob E

PS: Phil reminds us that this is International British Car Week so get them out and drive 'em!
