Sunday Run June 30, 2024

Argh!.....*bump*...*thump*...*wham-crash*...How did this road get so crappy in just two years.*smack-graaaate!*

The good old 102, my first choice for a scenic, twisty and windy road along the St. John river had become, in a lousy two years, pot-holed and broken with uneven repairs and great gouges.
"Too late to turn back now Rob...we're committed."  I thought to myself.
Tolerantly, *SWMBO wasn't saying anything despite the *ITYS smirk.
Rather than take Phil's route along the Broad road out of Oromocto and along the west side of the training area, we had decided to try the scenic route.  THAT one's off my list until we see a whole bunch of paving machines headed that way.
Mercifully, it improved after Brown's Flat and gave our suspensions a rest.  There was a great need for a pee stop too, but gas stations don't exist until one gets to the ferry terminal.  At the Westfield ferry we found the station closed and desperation forced us to add to the rise in global sea levels while providing entertainment for the local gulls.  Don't ask.
The road along the Kingston peninsula to the Gondola Point ferry was excellent but foggy.   After that it was a quick trip along the 119, Hwy 1, and the 111 to Spinnies Sea Food parlour in St Martins.
Highly recommended by Pam-n-Phil Ossinger, the take-out was excellent.  The fish was lip-smackingly delicious with generous portions.  After the often less-than-fun drive, it was very welcome.  Despite the foggy wind (how maritimey eh?) blowing on shore, it was pleasant.
The return trip continued up the 111 towards Sussex.  THAT was an amazing drive.  It became quite foggy as we climbed over the coastal hills, which seemed appropriate.  The road is excellent...hilly, twisty, and devoid of traffic. The scenery became visible as we descended into the Sussex valley, out of the heavy fog.
We'll be doing this one again but avoiding the 102.
Thanks to Pam-n-Phil for scouting out the route and restaurant.

Sunday trip to St Martin's for lobster.

 30th June (this Sunday)

A 3 hour trip to St Martin's....
RAIN OR SHINE!

Sunday's run to St Martins may see a few sprinkles.
Bring along some camping chairs and umbrellas.

We'll meet at Scott's Nursery parking lot for an 11:00 AM departure.
The route takes us into Oromocto where we pick up Broad Rd. We follow this into Geary and take the Branch Rd.  This becomes the 101 then.....
I don't imagine anyone wants the whole route in detail.  I'll hand out sheets at the meeting point.   We wind up on the Westfield Ferry then the ferry at Reed's Point to Quispamsis.  There's a quick trip on Hwy 1 to get to the 111 which will take us to St Martin's.
The return trip can be done via Sussex on the 111.

Report on June Meeting

We escaped the heatwave and met for dinner in the Carnation restaurant in Oromocto.

Folks might like to know that we set a new record yesterday by beating the previous
record set in 1951 by almost 3 degrees C.  Global warming is finally hitting us here.

Gary took the floor and led off with some recent news:
  • Phil's breakfasts are always a hit but will be moving to (possibly) The Coffee Mill for a few weeks while some renovations are done at our favourite spot, the Sunshine Diner.
  • July 12 and 13th is the British motoring Festival in Windsor.
  • August 24th sees the 100th Anniversary of the RCAF airshow in ZX...
  • The Wednesday evening car shows continue off of Queen St. behind what used to be the Legion...and will be again.
  • Our old favourite, the Stanley Fair is...oh ya..I'd better call Larry...will let ya's all know in a day or two.
  • Who has, or knows the whereabouts of the Bent spoke award and the mudflaps?
  • Sept 23rd and 24th sees the OwlsHead Museum trip.
  • There's a trip somewhere on the 6th of July but I missed the details.  Watch here for a post.
  • We'll be going to Spinney's in St Martin's on the 29th of June.  Details will be posted soonest.
  • There's also rumoured to be a car show there at the same time.
  • We completely forgot to plan a next meeting.  Maybe we can do a picnic at Carleton Park again.  Those were popular.
Knowing that not everyone is obsessive about checking the site, I'll be sending out emails on upcoming trips.  Anyone who wants to be on the list is to email me (Bob) at bobearl@hushmail.com
Don't worry, I won't sign anyone up on any hacking forums, pirate sites or Discord servers.

Invite to Gerald Elliott Racing Shop

I got the email below from Gerald Elliott recently.  Some of you will remember him from our Zoom meetings during Covid.  He is a veteran racer and knew a number of our members.  He has invited any of us who are going to the Greenwood  Airshow or the British Motoring Festival to drop by for a visit and a shop tour.  He has a couple of very interesting cars.  A photo of the heavily modified Cortina is attached.

I’m hoping to take him up on the invitation on the way to the BMF Show.

Phil
