Argh!.....*bump*...*thump*...*wham-crash*...How did this road get so crappy in just two years.*smack-graaaate!*
The good old 102, my first choice for a scenic, twisty and windy road along the St. John river had become, in a lousy two years, pot-holed and broken with uneven repairs and great gouges.
"Too late to turn back now Rob...we're committed." I thought to myself.
Tolerantly, *SWMBO wasn't saying anything despite the *ITYS smirk.
Rather than take Phil's route along the Broad road out of Oromocto and along the west side of the training area, we had decided to try the scenic route. THAT one's off my list until we see a whole bunch of paving machines headed that way.
Mercifully, it improved after Brown's Flat and gave our suspensions a rest. There was a great need for a pee stop too, but gas stations don't exist until one gets to the ferry terminal. At the Westfield ferry we found the station closed and desperation forced us to add to the rise in global sea levels while providing entertainment for the local gulls. Don't ask.
The road along the Kingston peninsula to the Gondola Point ferry was excellent but foggy. After that it was a quick trip along the 119, Hwy 1, and the 111 to Spinnies Sea Food parlour in St Martins.
Highly recommended by Pam-n-Phil Ossinger, the take-out was excellent. The fish was lip-smackingly delicious with generous portions. After the often less-than-fun drive, it was very welcome. Despite the foggy wind (how maritimey eh?) blowing on shore, it was pleasant.
The return trip continued up the 111 towards Sussex. THAT was an amazing drive. It became quite foggy as we climbed over the coastal hills, which seemed appropriate. The road is excellent...hilly, twisty, and devoid of traffic. The scenery became visible as we descended into the Sussex valley, out of the heavy fog.
We'll be doing this one again but avoiding the 102.
Thanks to Pam-n-Phil for scouting out the route and restaurant.

For a forecast that was calling for 100% rain in southern NB it really turned out to be a pretty good day...with hardly any rain! Like Bob says Route 102 is pretty rough....a real suspension torture. Other than that, this turned out to be a great run! The end result, as you can see from Bobs pics was a great meal and as he also said we really have to do this run again sans driving on Route 102.
Thanks to Bob and Dianne for putting on such as great run. Much appreciated!

Bob, we didn't drive the 102 for a reason. Haven't been on it for a couple of years and don't plan on it. We've driven Rt. 111 from St. Martins to Sussex a number of times and always enjoy the ride. On our last trip we were able to do it with the top down.
We'll be going back again for another lobster roll.
Phil
Phil, next time we go I'd like to go through Cambridge Narrows then down through Norton. It's almost a direct route to St Martins and picks up the 111 halfway to Sussex. That bit across the coastal hill range is spectacular.
