A Report on the Cornhill Run August 30/2009

Cloudy skies and unseasonal temperatures didn't put off some 30 FABACians from enjoying a wonderful tour yesterday (30 August) to the Sussex area of New Brunswick. With top downs, engines a-revving and a willingness to really enjoy their cars, the members left the Ramada in Fredericton to head out along Highway105.

Along the way, Bob and Dianne E (Jag XKE) and Rob and Nettie H (with visiting friends from Newfoundland) joined the convoy. After a stop at McCready's, the tour now led by Jim and Ellie Bleakney, continued along the four-lane to the Havelock turn-off and eventually to the Cornhill Nursery in Cornhill.

After a 45-minute stop here to see the huge variety of plants, shrubs and trees for sale, the group, now joined by members from Saint John, continued to tour along rolling, winding back roads to the Gasthof Old Bavarian Restaurant in Knightville. Here everyone was treated to a gastronomic feast of traditional Bavarian food - and wine and beer!! A truly delightful ending to a tour with a difference. The drive back (at least for the Fredericton folks) along Highway 10 included a spectacular sunset. What a day and not a single mechanical breakdown!!

Tour Confirmed for Sunday 30th August

A tour led by John Bowles and Jim Bleakney to Cornhill Nurseries and the Gasthof Old Bavarian Restaurant in the beautiful Kennebecasis River area of New Brunswick will start from the Ramada Hotel, Fredericton at 1.30 pm on Sunday, 30th August, rain or shine.
With rest stops along the way, it will involve some of the most attractive countryside and paved side roads the province has to offer. The Gasthof is renowned for its good food at fair prices. We expect to arrive there by 5.00 p.m. when FABACians from the Saint John area may wish to rendezvous.
The tour arrangement was confirmed at our last monthly supper meeting when some 20 people (10 cars) agreed to participate.
An important addendum: Please note the Gasthof Restaurant DOES NOT accept credit or debit cards, only cash or cheques. Be prepared accordingly.

Remember the Owl's Head Museum?

Several FABACians remember the rainy weekend we went to the Owl's Head Museum. We had a great weekend but admit to getting wet.
Dennis reminds me that the yearly auction has taken place and some interesting cars sold at sometimes reasonable price. Check it out here.

It's been 50 years!

From Stephen W:
As I travelled across the country this summer I took a number of pictures of British and other exotic cars. I thought club members might like to see them. The group of cars that show up in three photos are the Saskatchewan British Auto Club touring through the Rockies around Banff.

And I thought I had a blower fan problem!!!

Other Clubs having fun

I received an email from Joe H:
Just passing along a link to some photos that were taken at a BATANS event at the farm of a friend of mine in Nova Scotia. The highlight was the "how many in a mini" contest--the women won 14 to 10. The three in the trunk was cheating a little in my opinion.

FABAC in the Garden Tuesday, Aug.25

This just in from Heather C-D:

FABACians interested in gardens and gardening are invited to see our gardens on August 25. We will meet the group at Porter's Diner (formerly Fred's Pancake House) on the Hanwell Road (Route 640) at 6:45pm. For those who want to come directly to the house, continue 3.9km out the Hanwell from Porters. Turn right onto Deerwood Drive. Come 2.9km in Deerwood. Our house # 295 is on the left. It is a dark brown log home. There is plenty of room to park.

I've included several pics taken this week. See you Tuesday.

More human ingenuity than you'll ever see in a lifetime! Put aside a bit of time to explore the range of 'fixes' this site has to offer.

Notes and Photos from August Meeting

Thanks to Bob S. for his work in so promptly preparing this report:

Twenty seven FABACians found their way to Ringo's Restaurant last evening for our August meeting. And, a lively meeting it was! Lots of business to take care of mixed in with much chatter and laughter.

FABAC Meeting Wednesday, August 19th

It's that time again–eating and meeting. This time we are at Ringo's at the top of Smythe Street across the street from the mall, 6:00 p.m.
Lots to talk about. See you there.

Wear your badges. I have a few that were requested that I will bring along with me. If you need one, let me know.

Another FABAC Quiz

(Click on the image if you want a larger version.)

"It's pretty easy to figure out what the car is, but why does she look like this? I'll buy a beer for whomever comes up with the first correct answer. And no, Joe, you're not allowed to answer."
Bob

Good for a chuckle or three

While we wait patiently for someone to answer the previous quiz, you might want to read a little article that Joe H. sent our way. Yes, it is about an old MG-TC.

Another engine quiz

What kind of engine is this and who should care?

Thanks to Phil O for this one.

Today's Quiz

What is this and why should we care?

Head over (w)heels!

Many of us met Bruce and Johanna's daughter and world-famous cyclist Catharine at a recent FABAC meeting. In her e-mail, Johanna said, "It's not all medals and glory, but she is ok if sore." This fabulous photo was taken by Dave Kraus.

The Official Rexton Report

British Car Days of New Brunswick 2009. What a weekend! What a show for participants with its excellent location, organization and hospitality. And what a way for Curry and Sherry Alders to win yet another award in their Austin-Healey 3000!!

The second annual show held in Rexton, north of Shediac last weekend (Aug 7-9) included FABACians from Fredericton Dwight and Barbara (MGB), Curry and Sherry (Austin-Healey 3000), Jim W. (Morgan +4) and John and Shirley Ann (MGB). Terry and Kim W. and Barry and Sue G. represented our Saint John chapter. Nice to see yet another Healey in Don H's capable hands.

The Fredericton FABACians drive up on the Friday as far as Shediac was uneveventful. Dry roads, blue skies and moderate temperatures made for good top-down motoring. We stopped for lobster rolls and fish cakes in Shediac, blissfully ignoring the darkening clouds and gathering storm. When the storm broke with torrential rain and hailstones no less, the tops were still down and the interiors of the three cars got well and truly soaked. Drying out started the minute we'd arrived at Jardine's Inn in Rexton for our two-night stay!

Show participants were welcomed on the Friday evening by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rexton to a wine and canapés reception in the Bonar Law Interpretation Centre overlooking the Richibucto River and the show field. The excellent get-together enabled participants to renew old acquaintances and make new ones and for the organizers to get to know them too.

Saturday dawned bright and sunny. The 40 participating cars were lined up on a large circular graveled driveway to avoid the planned show field made sodden with the previous day's rain. They included Jaguars, Triumphs, Sunbeam-Talbots, Rolls-Royces, MGs, Austin-Healeys and a venerable 1923 Vauxhall.

Chamois leathers, towels plus the sun soon dried out wet car interiors. Further polishing and preening followed. As did the crowds of visitors including more FABACians, the Nielsens, Hoggs and Russells who came for the day. (see separate story).

At the Awards Dinner, Bob Hamilton of Waverley, NS won the Mayor's Award with his black 1954 Sunbeam Talbot 90 convertible and Rod Krolouski of St. George won the Participant's Award in his 1952 MG TD. The People's Choice Award went to the Alders while a vote of thanks to the organizers was made by Jim Woodford. Local MLA, Premier Shawn Graham also spoke, declaring the provincial Government would be interested in supporting future British Car Days.

The event concluded the next morning with a Lions Club breakfast and parade through the town. Escorted by RCMP vehicles with their flashing lights, participants were acknowledged with smiles and waves from hundreds of kerbside onlookers. The parade ended at a campsite where more crowds had gathered and the organizers concluded the event with a brief ceremony.

The organizers took the opportunity to state the 2010 show will be even bigger and better. There will be more facilities at the show site, a greater choice of accommodation in the Rexton area, and enhancements to the show. These will likely include provision for an expanded indoor facility in the event of rain, more inducements for show entries and a better program of alternative partner activities.

With its organizational ability, great community involvement, and attractive venue, the organizers of British Car Days of New Brunswick have a real winner on their hands. The FABACian contingent from Fredericton believe it. They have already booked their accommodation for next year's event! What a contrast to this year's "International Motoring Festival" in PEI!!!

A Saturday Trip to Rexton

Click on the photo for the full meal deal (You should have been there, Bob!)

Although I hope we will get a report from our FABACians who took in the whole event at Rexton, I am happy to report that Rob and Nettie, Margot and Dave, and Carolyn and David were able to make it a day trip. It was great to see so many FABACians (including our Saint John area friends) displaying their beautiful cars, and it wonderful to see that the Rexton event has experienced some healthy growth.

Our little contingent had a most enjoyable trip, lobster rolls at lunch, a nice visit to the car show, a walk on the dunes near Bouctouche, a splendid meal at the Dunes View Restaurant just north of Bouctouche, and a clear and beautiful evening drive home.

What was it?

Rainy day Friday quiz: Carolyn reported hearing a strange noise when she turned on the heater/ac fan in our Camry (Yes, every LBC owner needs a reliable backup.) I looked up on the Internet how to remove the blower, did it, and found the problem. First person who gives me the correct answer gets a free drink of their choice at the next meeting (not a glass of 1947 Cheval Blanc though–be reasonable!)

Join us for a run to Rexton

A good number of our members are on their way today to Rexton for the British car show held this weekend. Carolyn and I plan to take a drive there on Saturday morning, lunch in the Rexton area, take in the sights at the car show early afternoon, go for a walk on the trails at Kouchibouguac National Park, eat supper somewhere and return in the evening. Anyone who would like to join us for any or all of the day would be most welcome. If you are interested, meet us at the Ramada (just off the Princess Margaret Bridge north side) for a departure at 9:00 a.m.
Please note: The Princess Margaret Bridge will be closed all weekend so if you are crossing the river, use the Westmoreland Street Bridge.

Thanks to Dwight for tracking this down. Here is the reply he received from Service New Brunswick:

Thank you, Dwight, for taking the initiative on this topic. I followed up on your lead and obtained further information from SNB. All the details can be found on our FABAC FOCUS site. I'll be interested in hearing your comments.

The Alders' Pot Luck

I arrived late but there was considerable evidence that everyone was having a great time. I like the Lotus clothesline. ;-)

A Nice Day today for a Pot Luck at the Alders

It's Sunday, and the sun is shining(well at least once in a while). FABACians still wondering what to do later this afternoon and evening should head over to Sherry and Curry's home for fun, food and friends. Bring name tags. Lost? Maybe this will help:
Go past the Mactaquac Dam on the old highway. Turn off 102 onto Mazerolle Settlement Road and about 300 meters in turn right on to Woodbine Drive. Turn right on to Woodmere Drive at stop sign and drive to the very end through cul de sac into our drive way.
