Rainy day Friday quiz: Carolyn reported hearing a strange noise when she turned on the heater/ac fan in our Camry (Yes, every LBC owner needs a reliable backup.) I looked up on the Internet how to remove the blower, did it, and found the problem. First person who gives me the correct answer gets a free drink of their choice at the next meeting (not a glass of 1947 Cheval Blanc though–be reasonable!)

A mouse had crawled into the heater, built a nest in the 'squirrel cage' blower then died. The centrifigal force pulled it's leg(s) or tail out of the cage which hit a part of the heater interior as the cage rotated making the noise.
When you removed the heater blower fan you found leaves or a nasty little critter playing house in your car, Regards Rob H.
a pen or the top of a pen left on the dash and fell down the vent
heater bearings got a bit sticky with all the rain we have had? and developed a coating of rust?
I think a maple leaf got drawn into the heater and was touching the fan.

if it is a mouse (was) according to Toyota mechanics to avoid this happening again They told me to prevent this from happening again leave the car overnight with the recirculation button on. Not sure what that does but it must shut a gateway to the AC cage.
We had a Ford luxary car in the shop a bunch of years ago that reaked when the heater A/C was on. A family of mice moved in and only a few moved out - under their own speed.
What a fabulous tip, Anony-mouse! It makes so much sense that switching to recirculation setting would close a door to the little creatures. I wonder if Carolyn and I could get into the habit of remembering to do this each time we park the car.
