Despite a lot of button pushing and much encouragement from those gathered, Jim B was having no success with his little camera so pictures may or may not accompany this article.
The last event of the year was a quiet-ish affair at Lorraine and Jim's place where the lack of FABACians was made up for with lots of Jim's musical guests. We wondered what had happened to so many of the others since the roads were fine; the snow having finished falling by morning.
In any event we all had fun. There was just enough food and my bottle of absinthe managed to just last the evening. The pub saw a small but steady clientèle sampling the assortment of drinks who had no end of problems getting the damn things open. We have to buy the bar a heavy duty bottle top twister-offer. The evening ended with the news that Dianne and I had just become grandparents (Dianne had been hovering over her phone all evening) and the group was tickled pink to learn that our new granddaughter had been named after an LBC (Morgan).
It was a fine way to end the year and we all hope that the snow ends soon.
Happy new year from Dianne and Bob Earl and granddaughter Morgan.

Jim and Lorraine's Music Fest Monday, December 30th
Jim and Lorraine are having their annual pre-new year's eve music fest at their place. They have invited us to attend this festive musical event. Things get underway at 6:00.
This is a pot luck, finger food and BYOB event. As Bob pointed out in his minutes please please RRSP at the address provided or call them.
I'm sure too that Jim and Lorraine would appreciate any musical talent you might provide to the event but for those like me who do not have musical abilities you are also most welcome.
Merry Christmas everyone,
Gary

Report on the December 19th FABAC meeting
There may be missing information in this report as my notebook is still in the car and Dianne is working late.
We really should eat at Dimitri's more often, the food is wonderful.
Gary opened with a short (thankfully) recap of this years events and get togethers. Despite some awful weather we had a surprising number of runs.
Jim W dropped by and invited folks to his place for the annual pre-new year's eve music fest. It starts at 6:00PM on next Monday, the 30th **PLEASE** RSVP Lorraine and Jim if you plan to attend. (363-4697 or jim@torrefiedwoodpellet.com)
John's monthly quiz stalled as the flag dropped once he discovered that it had been forgotten at home. An impromptu short quiz was held which caused no end of arguing despite the correct answer being quickly found.
Bob E.
A good seasonal chuckle stolen from the E-Type forum:
"With the Holidays upon us I would like to share a personal experience with my E-Type friends about drinking and driving. This is a first for me, as I normally dont preach to others. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends. Well, two days ago I was out in the E for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit'. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before. I don't know where I got it and now that it's in my garage, I don't know what to do with it."

Convertible tops and other things
I have on my Westfield a canvas top rather than the normal vinyl found on brit sports cars. Often it was an option extra to have canvas, double duck, or mohair tops.
The problem with these tops is that they are very hard to keep clean. The dirt seems to penetrate the fibres of the material and despite all the upholstery cleaners, nothing gets them clean.
Last year I found a cleaner and restorer in the States but it came with price of around $160 US. However there is now a cleaner / restorer from the British firm Auto Glym that sells for just under $40 Cdn and is available from your local Crappy tire.
I have just bought the 2 pack system and will try it sometime over the winter and will report back with my findings.
Whilst in the store, I noticed that they have a clearance on the magnum tool chests. This one is the top of the range, 4ft wide with 8 drawers with lift latch handles.
The top lid has a power bar inside and lined with a non slip mat as are the top 2 drawers. However the neat thing is that the bottom of the chest which would rest on the bench actually pulls out to give you extended shelf to work on. Its an aluminium surface that will stay nice and clean and means you don't lose and workbench space.
These normally sell for $900 though I have seen them on offer for about $650 but the clearance price is only $300. This is a real good deal for what it is. If i didn't already have 2 tool boxes I would snap one of these up in a instant.
If your in the market go and have a look.
All for now

Christmas at the Crumleys
After much friendly conversation and a delicious supper yours truly gave the "2013 FABAC Year in Review". It was truly an entertaining and motivational event for which I have been asked to repeat again – but at a later date – much later!
The annual "Yankee Swap" lived up to its past heritage of being a fun and entertaining event. Barb lead the event skillfully and with poise. I have to say that as she is my wife!
We all wondered what Kelvin's "Evening Under the Tree" gift included and there much discussion on the possibility of an inflatable friend. This turned out not to be the case but certainly had that expectation. Oh well, better luck next year Kelvin.
Bob's gift of a huge quantity of windshield washer fluid may provide him an opportunity to open up a side business in windshield care. So don't be surprised to see Bob at your next busy traffic intersection.
For all the rest of us who participated it was another highlight of the evening of which there were many.
Once again from all of us we would like to send a huge thank-you to John and Anne for hosting this wonderful evening. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

FABAC Christmas Party this Saturday Dec 7/13
Just a reminder that this year's Christmas party will be held at John and Anne Crumley's. They are located on 29 Jupiter Court off Hanwell Rd. If you're coming from town, Jupiter is the first street on the left just past the Scholtens Store. Careful if using GPS as some brands have it mapped incorrectly. This is a Pot Luck, BYOB and RSVP.
We will also be having a Yankee Swap. Please bring a gift, $10-$15 value, for those who wish to participate. This is always a fun event so in FABAC tradition, "fun" gifts are always welcome.
The fun starts at 6PM.
Merry Christmas.

Report on last night's "Casino" Party
Despite a minor deluge (it wasn't really raining THAT hard), a small group of us gathered in Kelvin's garage to eat. We didn't play with any of the casino gear as we wound up watching vintage racing movies and trying to decide what Kelvin should do with the race car that mostly sits in the garage. We made a pretty good dent in the Shepard's pie too.

Report on the November Meeting
Brewbakers, the four-star restaurant in downtown Fredericton was the venue for this month’s FABAC dinner meeting. Crisp tablecloths and napkins set off the elegant setting of the restaurant’s private room where 28 FABACians enjoyed good food and fellowship, talked about their cars and discussed plans for future FABAC events. With Jim B in “the chair” acting for an absent Gary A., first up was Kelvin P. who confirmed arrangements for a “Casino Night” on Wednesday November 27th at his home in Noonen (see separate post for details). The December 7th Xmas Party at the Crumleys was discussed and a list was circulated confirming what food members would bring to the party (see separate post for details) And finally, the new King Street Ale House was chosen for the next meeting on December 18th with Sandi B. agreeing to make the arrangements.
During the evening, David N. congratulated Sandi on winning the prestigious 2013 Alfred Kinsey Award presented by the Society for Scientific Study of Sexuality for her extensive work as a leading researcher on human sexuality. Everyone joined in the applause. Later, John B. presented another 20 question quiz about cars, motoring and motorsport. (“When was MG Cars established? Answer: 1929). The winner was Joe H. who won a recent copy of Classic and Sports Cars magazine as a prize.
- John B.
Addendum:
And we must not forget Al Thomas for arranging the meeting place, including a FABAC logo at the entrance door and a fine Triumph banner at the end of the room. Also, he arranged for one lucky winner to get their meal free—compliments of the restaurant. The lucky winner was Dr. John. A good evening.

A Stirling afternoon was had by all!
Larry and Sandi H entertained in their huge garage Saturday (Oct 26) nearly 20 FABACians with demonstrations of the unusual Stirling engine and a lunch of homemade chili with all the fixings.
Stirling engines come in all sizes from demonstration models, of which Larry has 25 or more, to full size ones such as those used in diesel-electric submarines to recharge their batteries. Known for their super quietness in operation, a Stirling engine is a heat engine vastly different from the internal combustion in our LBCs. It operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air at different temperature levels to create a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work (See Wikipedia for more info) Larry’s demonstrations included a a Stirling engine powering a model train, an early Benz automobile and a lighting display.
Following the demonstrations and lunch, another social hour was passed chatting and exploring Larry’s collection of LBC posters, car models and his re Triumph TR3A before returning home. A huge “thank you” to Sandi and Larry for a great time and wonderful hospitality.
John B.
Thanks to Jim and Ellie for this nice collection of photos from the event.

An invitation to view Larry's Stiring engine collection
Hello Folks,
At our meeting last Wednesday, several people expressed interest in seeing my Stirling engine collection. Better sooner rather later, so you are invited to our place, specifically the shop building, at around 11:00 on Saturday, October 26. I will plan on having about 6 Stirling engines (well maybe one steam turbine) that we can fire up. Following that we will serve a light lunch and beverages (no need to bring anything).
For those who haven’t been here, we are at 135 Red Rock Road, Stanley. If you find yourself on the dirt/gravel end of Red Rock, stop and turn around, you’re at the wrong end of the road. Stay on English Settlement for a few more km and you’ll hit the other end of the Red Rock Road. It’s a nice 35-40 minute drive up the Nashwaak River (Route 8) or Royal Road. For planning purposes, please let me know if you can come, either by responding to this post, emailing me- Heinlein@unb.ca, or calling- 367-2443. Thanks.

Carolyn and David's 3200+km trip
This past week, Carolyn and I visited friends in London, Ontario to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Although we didn't take the Morgan, those of you who went to Stowe a couple of years back will recall much of the route on our return trip.
The amazing thing about the trip is that we traveled in three provinces and four states with BEAUTIFUL weather throughout the trip. All that countryside through the mountains is beautiful at any time, but there was still enough colour to make for some impressive views. Carolyn took several wonderful shots. Click on the one below for a few samples. (I have included a few food shots to balance things out appropriately. :-)

Minutes of the October 16th Meeting by Gary
We had a pretty good turnout at McGinnis Landing with 25 FABACians attending. The main focus of our discussions were:
Jim and Lorraine's plans for next years "Pig Roast"
Jim's vision is to continue the successful "Pig Roast" event that he sponsored this past year. Next year, he wants it to grow, to be fun and to be inclusive of other clubs and other foreign automobile marques. To that end at our last meeting he invited anyone to attend a planning session at his place. We did that a few weeks back to plan the broad elements of that event. That group met and with Jim came up with following key elements:
- John and Anne would sponsor a Friday evening pot luck appetizer event at their home. This would bring everyone together as a meet and greet and to just unwind from either a days drive or just as a way to "chin wag" with new and old friends.
- On Saturday morning, Jim and Ellie would lead a tour (probably up river) for Breakfast and a tour of some of New Brunswick's beautiful river scenery. Jim would have the group back early enough for a break before the main event at Jim and Lorraine's.
- Saturday afternoon would see the "Big Event" start at Jim and Lorraine's at 2pm. The event would be focused on fun with games, entertainment, delicious food, beautiful cars, prized and great people and that's just the start of the action. The afternoon would start with games. These have yet to be finalized but we discussed such things as "driving blind folded with only verbal instruction from an assistant through an obstacle course, a vehicular golf game, and a few others. Bob Laroche took the lead on this. At our FABAC meeting we asked for game ideas and that these be sent to Bob. We will also be looking for a few others to help Bob in coordinating and initiating these games at Jim's.
The event would be Aug 8-10 with an alternate of Aug 15-17.
There would also be live entertainment with tried and true local talent, some from within our own group. More on that later, but the invite too goes out to anyone who would like to perform their talents. I'm sure we could find a venue for you.
Of course the big deal will be the "Pig Roast" that was so much of a success this summer.
There was discussion of a "People's Choice" car award. There could be a "significant" door prize and so so many other reasons to come.
While the 3 main parts of the event have been established there is still much planning to do on the detail and we still need ideas and input in how to go about a lot of this so your input and participation is important and needed. Our next planning session will be held at John and Anne's on Wed Nov 13 at 7pm. Please join us and please stay tuned as this will be the event to attend next summer.
2013 FABAC Christmas Party
Once again Jim and Lorraine have invited us to their home for our Christmas party. Please reserve Saturday evening Dec 7/13 for this event. More details to follow but you can be sure we will do the annual Yankee Swap that has been so much fun in the past.
Last months events/tours/runs:
Jim and Ellie put a wonderful, entertaining and scenic tour to St George last month. A good time was had by all. See previous report for details. Thank you Jim and Ellie for a great fun run.
Both David and Carolyn and later David and Margo had a delightful and memorable visit to Bristol N.B. See their previous postings on our site.Perhaps this is a tour opportunity for the group or individuals next year?
Upcoming events/tours/runs:
Dwight organized a Train Pie Tour to the McAdam train station. Unfortunately not enough people signed up in order to make the minimum reservation. That's really too bad as it would have been a nice tour and event. Thanks Dwight for looking into this.
Larry, who has a collection of small gas compression engines (Sterling Engines) has invited us to view these operating . He will offer this opportunity sometime in the fall. Significant interest was shown at the meeting.
There are no other runs planned for the rest of the year which is a shame as there is still opportunity for same.
Next FABAC Meeting and Place:
The next meeting will be at Brubakers, Wednesday Nov 20. Al Thomas has agreed to make the reservations.
Thanks everyone.

This looks and sounds familiar. :-)
David: We did a reprise of your last weeks trip. We drove up 102-105-103 yesterday to Giberson's B & B. We then had dinner at Fresh (3 hours plus). It was, as advertised, excellent and the time flew by. Had a wonderful breakfast this morning and checked out after having a great conversation with our hosts who loaned us hiking sticks. We did the Shikethawk Trail - both ways- and headed home in glorious top down conditions. Highway 103 from Hartland to Woodstock is my FAVOURITE road. We then had lunch at O'Toole's Gallery-Celtic Fox Coffee House, where the owner, after inspecting our car and pronouncing it "nice" - said it wasn't as nice as the Morgan that was there last week.
I will be sure to boycott that establishment. Then down on 105 -102 (from Nackawic). All in all a wonderful 24+ hours. Thanks for forcing us into doing it. David R.
PS. Ian Giberson told us a person driving on 103 in front of the B&B, while your car was parked, drove up their driveway to take pictures of the Morgan. I can't understand it!!!

Today's chuckle
True story (??) reported by an English guy who was stopped and asked to give a breathalyzer test.
The English guy lives near Le Bugue in the Dordogne and at the time he was stopped he was quite drunk.
The gendarme signals to him to wind down the window then asks him if he has been drinking, and with a slurring speech the English guy replies; 'Yes, this morning I was at my (hic)..daughter's wedding, and as I don't like church much I went to the cafe opposite and had several beers.'
'Then during the wedding banquet I seem to remember downing three great bottles of wine; (hic)... a corbieres, a Minervois and (hic)...a Faugeres.'
'Then to finish off during the celebrations.... and (hic) during the evening ...me and my mate downed two bottles of Johnny Walker's black label.'
Getting impatient the gendarme warns him; 'Do you understand I'm a policeman and have stopped you for an alcohol test'?
The Englishman with a grin on his face replies; 'Do you understand that I'm English, like my car, and that my wife is sitting in the other seat, at the wheel?'

Carolyn and David's Overnighter to Bristol, NB
Carolyn and I took advantage of the beautiful weather on Wednesday and Thursday to take the Morgan up through Nackawic then onto Route 105 to Woodstock . We hiked a nice trail along the Meduxnekeag River near Woodstock then drove on to Florenceville-Bristol. Reservations had been made for fine dining on the railcar restaurant at Bristol — "Fresh". Wonderful wonderful food!
We spent the night at a beautiful B&B at Connell. Ate a fine breakfast and headed off to the Shikethawk Trail. New Brunswick has so many beautiful trails.
We used Route 103 all the way back to Woodstock and ate at the Celtic Fox (O'Toole Gallery). The 105 and the 103 connecting Woodstock and Florenceville were both pretty good Morgan roads. Our only mistake was remaining on the 105 from Nackawic to home—disgraceful road conditions.
Regardless of the multitude of bumps, the Morgan never complained, and Carolyn and I agreed that the weather, the picturesque countryside, the food, and the accommodations, all were tops.

A Great Fall Poker Run Rally for a Great Cause
The Foreign Auto Club in Moncton has invited us to attend their Poker Run this weekend.
- Gary
It’s going to be beautiful this Sunday, October 6th, for a Great Rally for a Great Cause.
Rhys’ Run is an annual event where ALL are welcome participate. Your involvement gives strength to our mission to raise funds for the Moncton Hospital Neonatal Intensive Cae Unit. Ride with us in this inspirational 4 hour event as we come together to remember and support each other.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides the highest level of care for sick or premature infants. The unit also provides help to families during this stressful time, and prepares them for taking their infants home.
PLEASE JOIN US and support Rhys’ Run, an Annual Memorial Poker Run!
The Annual Memorial Poker Run begins at the Moncton Coliseum where all participants gather in their classic or everyday cars to begin a 4 hour poker run in memory of Rhys and all premature infants taken away too soon. Here all the participants register and are dealt their first card.
From the Moncton Coliseum we head to Hopewell Rocks and stop at Parking Lot “C”. This is a brief stop where the second card is dealt.
The group then travels on to our second stop at Wolf Lake (Fundy National Park) where there is access to public restrooms and where the third card is dealt.
The forth stop is at Mrs. Dunsters Donut Shop in Sussex. Here our forth card is dealt and we break for coffee and snacks before heading to our final destination.
We leave Sussex for our final destination, the Atlantic Motorsports Museum, in Pedicodiac. Here the final card is dealt and everyone’s hand is revealed. The participant with the winning Poker hand wins half the admission money. The more participants the bigger the win!

Proposed McAdam Train Station Run
As requested at our last meeting I spoke to McAdam's mayor, Frank Carol about a FABAC run to the train station. Although the station is closed for the season, group reservations are being taken. FABAC is more than welcome for a Sunday afternoon tour with railway pie and a beverage at a 10$ per person.
We must have a minimum of 20 people with a firm commitment by the preceding Tuesday. In discussions with Gary, I made a tentative booking on behalf of the club for Sunday, October 20. We will gather at Tim's on the fair grounds for a 1:30 departure, the tour at about 2:15 and pie at 3:30.
People will need to let me know (fdball@nbnet.nb.ca) by 8pm on Monday, October 14 (yes, that's Thanksgiving Day). I will confirm or cancel our booking with the station first thing on the morning of the 15th.
Once booked, this will be a rain or shine commitment.

What a day!!!! St. George Run
Report from Gary:
To say we had a fantastic tour to St George would not be overstating it in the least. In fact this run that Jim and Ellie directed with the help of Rod K in St. George rated up there as one of the best for the season. We had beautiful weather, great roads, fantastic autumn scenery and a cast of characters that would make any get together a fun time and that's exactly what we had – a fun time. We also had a road challenge to contend with. Jim B had arranged a "moose calling" tutorial somewhere on the road between Fredericton Junction and St George. Jim was demonstrating with moose calls how male and female moose are able to attract one another during mating season. It was all very entertaining, really, but lucky for us none of the local moose saw fit to join in the chorus although some FABACians did demo their moose calling prowess. Even one member tried calling a "Jaguar", I believe the "XKE" species. Unfortunately none appeared – only a few of the common breeds were attracted to the calls.
I'm not quite sure how all this moose calling and moaning affected the cars, but it was shortly after this exercise as we were getting back underway, to continue the last leg of our journey, when David N noticed coolant blowing back against his windshield and leaking from underneath his Morgan. It was obvious it was quite a serious issue that needed immediate attention. While moose calling may not be one of our strengths, the ability to diagnose a serious car condition, come up with a fix for it and then muster the resources from duct tape, to hose clamps to just plain old Canadian ingenuity helped temporarily repair the defective radiator hose that was the source of the problem. Many thanks to all those that contributed especially to Ralph H and Jim B who always seem to carry the correct parts needed to affect a repair. With problem now resolved (for most part) we were able to make it the rest of the way to St George without incident passing through some of the most beautiful scenery, especially around Lake Utopia, that one could ask for. Jim and Ellie really do know the "back roads and reaches" of New Brunswick and those of us who take the opportunity to join them are always happy that we do.
Once in St George we met up with Rod K who took us for another tour. This one through the town of St George, including through the beautiful and scenic downtown area, over the gorge bridge to see the popular "St George gorge" and finally arriving at our restaurant destination "The Birches". The seafood there, at least this person's opinion, had to be some of New Brunswick's best. I had their "Fish and Chips" and it was without any doubt the best I've had for a very long time. Also judging from all the positive comments, most if not all others thought the same of their meals. Good choice, Rod. Hopefully you and your wife can make it up to our area so we can return the favor.
On the return trip home, the temporary repairs to David's Morgan for most part held. He had to stop a few times to top up the coolant and re tighten the hose clamps. David passed us in Harvey, on the last occasion where we waited for him so I'm at this point anticipating he did make it home safe and sound. I'll let David chime in here to tell the rest of the story.
(David's input: Curry was the one who first spotted the coolant problem as we returned to our cars after the moose calling. Bob LaR narrowed it down to a particular hose. My final analysis of what happened is that the radiator fan blades had been striking the hose for probably some time. After hitting a particularly severe bump, the blades took a deeper cut. And yes, what a group of resourceful members! Thanks to all.)
So, all in all, we had a great day and one that I shall remember for quite some time. Again many thanks to Jim and Ellie for organizing this tour and the added bonus of the entertainment and also to Rod K for organizing things at the St George end.
A great day had by all.

FABAC September 18th Meeting Report
- Sam Snead's restaurant at Kingswood golf course was the site of our September dinner-meeting. As always, Gary took the floor and opened with a big note of thanks to Robert & Rita for the gathering at their cottage on the lake. This was followed by a report on the BPR (Big Pig Roast) which somehow turned into a long discussion on the possibility of turning it into an annual event incorporating a gathering of British cars from other clubs. To this end, anyone who wishes to be involved in the planning is requested to gather at the Haughty Hound Pub (Jim W's basement) on Thursday, Oct 3rd at 7:30 PM.
- Jim B will lay out a fall leaf run to St. George over the next while.
- Kelvin proposed a casino night at his place on November 23rd. and hot on his heels Jim W set a date of Dec. 7th for our Christmas party.
- Our next meeting (November 20th) will be at McInnis Landing.
- In what has become a tradition, John B quizzed the gathering with car related questions. Stephen W surprised the club with his knowledge of old cars, particularly Bricklins. A somewhat heated discussion took place over various aspects of the company and car production. We pulled the two apart and most of us headed into town for ice cream. It was still warm enough to leave tops down and we all got to enjoy the drive home under a magnificent harvest moon.

Why you must be nuts...
Substitute any other LBC or classic car for Mini and many of us have been there. If you are “nuts” to own a classic car, are you “double nuts” if you own two? :~)

Jaguar Trip to Jasper
Rob says, "Have been following all the trips and activity's that the club have done over the summer, looks like everyone has had a great time.
"Here are some pictures from our first long trip to the Canadian Rockies in the Jag. All went well with just a couple of minor hiccups. (we ran out of refreshments at one point!) and we developed a slight misfire which induced some pucker moments. Did the usual drill, checked plug wires and coil connections, tightened spark plug caps onto wires, seemed to help slightly. Gas mileage worked out to be an amazing 22+ mpg. The weather was fabulous and the mountain roads were no hard task for the Jag. We took a half day rail trip to Dunster in BC and got some marvelous pics of Mt. Robson from the dome carriage which gave us a bird's eye view of the scenery. The local fire hall at Dunster is in one of the photographs! A tour bus picked us up from Dunster and brought us back to Jasper with a couple of stops at Rearguard Falls and Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. We would definitely recommend this trip.
We also took the tour of the Columbia ice fields on the ice explorer vehicle and filled our water bottle with glacier water. YUM! The ice we were standing on was as thick as the Eiffel Tower is tall. The accommodation was awesome and had resident geese and elk wandering around. There was a first class restaurant on site which would definitely be FABAC approved. All in All, it was an outstanding vacation, the only thing missing was the companionship of the club!

Feedback on the PEI British Car Days
I mentioned in my report for the above show that I would compile a note that I would forward to the PEI car show organizers with our recommendations as to what worked and what needed improvement. So with that in mind would those of you who attended please send me your recommendations. I'll also be sending a copy of this to our PEI British Car Club friends as requested by them. I'd like to get this done soon while the details are still fresh.
Thanks,
Gary
Thanks,
Gary
Note from Gerry
Gerry asked that his message be forwarded to the FABAC members.
Thanks,
Curry
Curry and Lynn,
I think I speak for all of us who followed you on last weeks tour of South Western New Brunswick, in saying that it was a great tour. The accommodations were great the attractions were great and, with the exception of Bob's ignition, it was all great. Once again I traveled on roads that didn't know even know existed. I think I put almost 1000 miles on the old Healey.
The visit to McAdam Station, the dinner at Bob Grants, Rod's tour of Granite town (aka St. George) and the reception of FABAC were all just excellent.
I would especially like to thank Jim and Lorraine Woodford for opening their beautiful home to us and throwing such a party.
I would also like to the guys and gals at the Haughty Hound Pub for providing a first class ending to a perfect day.
Again thank you very much
Gerry

Jim and Lorraine's Welcome to BATANS
Once again Jim and Lorraine hosted yet another huge welcoming event. This one to welcome the BATANS group who were here visiting southern New Brunswick under the stewardship of Curry Alders.
As we all know by now, Jim and Lorraine always host a grand signature event, which always seems to surpass any of their previous events. This one, a "Pig Roast" was no exception. So the question of the day, taking from the theme of the event, could have been, "How many people will a large roasted pig feed?" The answer of course is a lot, and although I do not know the exact number of people attending I can tell you it was a lot. In fact we had to bring out extra tables and chairs just to get everyone seated. I believe the BATANS group had 7 or 8 cars, representatives from The Foreign Car Club from Moncton came up, FABAC was out in full force as well as many invited friends attended.
There was entertainment in a big big way! The fiddling and spoon duo of David and Lorraine, brought many smiles, much applause and a lot of toe tapping participation from everyone. They really knew how to warm up a crowd. John Boles, our British automobile archivist/historian, tantalized the group with his knowledgeable questions. Both Paul Brooks and Bob LaRoche tied for answering the most questions correctly. Barb Graham tested peoples observation abilities with questions related to attending cars and surroundings. The winner of that quiz was Joe Hines. The final contest was a British song/artist quiz with none other then Kelvin singing the tunes. He did a wonderful job so much so that he received several encores! The winner on this quiz was all of us as we all so thoroughly enjoyed his singing.
Oh yes, the "Pig Roast" banquet and all the fixings that came with it including many contributed salads, rolls and desserts was more than just delicious, it was a meal to remember as was the whole event. The occasion gave us all the opportunity to meet and reacquaint with old friends and to make new friends.
We all had such a good time. Thank-you to Jim and Lorraine again for hosting such a wonderful and memorable event.
Our best to you both and much appreciation from all,
Gary and all attendees

Johanna on different wheels — "Ride to Conquer Cancer"
With my usual enthusiasm, I have signed up to ride the 2014 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. It is a 200 km bike ride from Toronto to Niagara falls, conducted over two days of hopefully pleasant weather on June 7 and 8, 2014. The first day we bike to Hamilton, camp out that night, and then proceed on to Niagara Falls the next day. Last year, they had 5,020 participants.
As with all of these ventures there is a requirement that we raise a certain amount of money for the charity - in this instance, the Princess Margaret Hospital. “Funds will support Princess Margaret's vision of Personalized Cancer Medicine - a multi-faceted, integrated approach to cancer care that focuses on the unique nature of each patient: "Finding the right treatment for the right patient, at the right time." I did not receive treatment from the Princess Margaret Hospital, but have no doubt benefitted from their research programme and would like to support the fundraiser. And I am asking for your help.
If you would like to support this, please go to www.conquercancer.ca and click on “Ontario 2014”. Then click onto “Donate”, and enter my participant name. It will take you to my personal page and tell you my story. Or you can click onto the “click here to visit my personal page” at the bottom of my letter. I have just started fundraising and thought I would approach friendly faces first. (I do hate fundraising.)
Any assistance you can offer would be much appreciated. They are providing tax donation receipts for all donations over $10.
Thank you,
Johanna

British Car Days - PEI
Just back from the British Car Day show at the Cymbria Lions Club near Rustico PEI. A good time was had by all those attending. FABAC had 6 cars participating and 3 members drove over in support and attended the days events. Those FABAC attending cars and members were:
Jim W. ( Jag XKE)
Ralph H. (MGA with many new parts!)
Alex and John H. (Triumph TR6)
Karen and Terry J. (Triumph TR7)
Shirley Anne and John B. (MGB)
Barb B and Gary A (Triumph TR6)
Kelvin P.
Barb and Dwight B.
So as you can see we had a pretty good turn out.
The Friday evening event again was held at the recently renovated Lions Club. PEI mussels, cold cuts and an open bar were the order of the day. It was well attended and gave everyone attending an opportunity to meet old friends.
Saturday's weather was perfect for a car show. It was cooler in the morning and warmed up to almost perfect weather conditions in the afternoon with bright blue skies. The event was held at the Cymbria Lions Club situated overlooking beautiful PEI farmlands and a small bay. An almost perfect setting if there was one. I understand from organizers that there were close to 80 cars participating (to be confirmed) in which we seen many of the regulars as well as some new entries. It was nice to see old and meet new friends from BATANS, the Moncton Club, the PEI Club and of course the Cape Breton Club as well as many others.
The event did not have all the competitive awards for each marque as it did when it was organized by the PEI British car club with its partners but it did have several other types of choice awards including participants and peoples choice awards, most senior and youngest attending, oldest car, furthest distance etc. More on those later. This type of show, I thought, gave it a more relaxed and less competitive feel in which you could mix and mingle more with the attendees or just speak with people about your car or sit back enjoy the weather and read a book. While I did miss the opportunity to compete in class, personally speaking, I must say I found this level of show quite enjoyable and very relaxed.
The awards banquet was also held at the Lions Club with your choice of Roast Beef or Turkey with hot beverage and dessert. Again, the bar was open and from my view quite busy! After everyone finished their meals the awards were presented and in true FABAC fashion we did well...really well! Jim Woodford took the "Peoples Choice Award" and Alex Hoffman took the "Most Senior Participant Award". A large congratulations to both. I'm sure there are pictures circulating so maybe they will appear here?
After the banquet, Jim W in usual festive form wanted to celebrate his and Alex's win with us and some bubbly, but there were no open lounges or bars in the near area so several of us made due in our small but comfortable room at the St. Nicholas Motel. I will always remember this show and this small but very enjoyable celebration as a "good time" and very much a cherished memory.
I will also be sending comments onto the Lions Club as to our experiences there and would like your comments as to what worked and what would make it an even more enjoyable event.
While not part of the car show event, if interested, ask me about our near disaster with a failed oil filter late Friday afternoon in the small town of Rustico when the one and only service station there was near closing time!
I'm sure too there are other memorable stories that other attending members will discuss as well and please too ask them what they thought of the show. It should be one you consider for next year.

So as you can see we had a pretty good turn out.
The Friday evening event again was held at the recently renovated Lions Club. PEI mussels, cold cuts and an open bar were the order of the day. It was well attended and gave everyone attending an opportunity to meet old friends.

Pig Roast at Jim and Lorraine's THIS THURSDAY
At our last regular meeting Jim Woodford mentioned the Nova Scotia British car club, BATANS, was touring southern NB the latter part of August. As part of their welcome to NB, Jim and Lorraine are inviting them and all of us to their home on Thursday August 29 for a real "pig roast". He made very clear he would like us to attend but had also requested we please confirm your attendance.
159 Mactaquac Heights Keswick Ridge
Please RSVP – ASAP – 363-4697 or e-mail jim@twpe.ca if you plan to attend and bring your chair and a dessert.
We too have been invited to participate in any or all of BATANS NB tour. I have copied their itinerary here (Click on "Read more" below) so you can review it in detail. As you will see they have organized a wonderful tour that we are welcome to participate in.

An MG that really GOES!
A couple of videos of a track day dual at Silverstone – an MGB GT Sebring and a 500 PLUS HP Mitsubishi Evo. The MG did quite well.
Amazing video of a very, very fast MGB GT!

Interesting bit of British automobile trivia
Whilst researching our British cars, I came across an interesting fact.
I was looking at the track dimension (Track being the dimension from the centre of the tyre on one side to the centre of the tyre on the other side). It appears that when designers in the UK were going to design a new model, they all started out with the same track dimension despite the size of the car. Here are the figures :--
MGB 50" late 49" early
TR6 50"
Healy 3000 50"
MG TD 50" rear 48"front
E TYPE 50"
The cars length varies from 12'1" to 14' 7"
In those days if it works, don't change it !!!

Request of TR6 owners
I am missing 193/194 page from my Haynes shop manual. It covers front suspension information. Let me know if I can get a photocopy or scan of it from you.

PEI Plans from our Saint John Chapter
So the plan for the FABAC south chapter (well that is Karen and I) is to lead our visiting American cousins thru to PEI on Friday morning with a stop at Tidal bore park in central Moncton at noon. From there it will be either out to Shediac or down the Petitcodiac river past Dorchester across the marshes and south of the NB main road to catch a good little NS back road out to the coast from Amherst and on up to the bridge.
The tidal bore should be a good show. It has been getting larger every month since the river was opened 2 years ago. Official time is 12:13 but you should plan 20 minutes either side so I plan to be there from 12 to after the show is over. Hope there might be some others to join us for the final run to the island.
